Brands are built on strong platform ideas. If the idea is strong enough and the executions are good enough, you can keep a brand platform going for years. So, what's a platform? My simplistic understanding is that a platform is an articulation of a human truth that links to the brand and is expressed most succinctly in the tagline. Here are a few platforms I have helped create and grow, except PAKn'SAVE. That was already done when I got to FCB, but I spent the next 12 years building on it.
I put this famous one first. Back in 98 at M&C Saatchi we pitched for Tourism NZ. On a flight to Queenstown for 'research' I looked at the water container I was holding. It said 'Pure New Zealand water'. I showed it to the english art director sitting next to me who was part of the pitch team and said I thought it would be a great line. Now I didn't come up with the clever 100% bit. That was someone else. I also didn't do that campaign that won the pitch. My vision for Pure New Zealand was that it was more than the obvious pretty scenery. I felt that when people come to NZ they have a more pure experience because there are less layers between the visitors and real kiwis. It felt like people leave having had a more pure holiday experience. Anyway, I left M&C before the campaign came out and at the start it was all just pretty scenery. But i still trade off the story.
The Four Square brand is all about convienience. When we introduced the 'What'll be today' platform a few years ago we weren't in a position to do it with a telly ad. That came later. Instead, we launched the platform with a radio campaign. But when you have a strong simple platform thought you can execute in any channel.
This platform is gone now but we were really proud of the work done around this brutal truth. It began with taking over an ad break and inviting Kiwis to use the time to make an escape plan for their family.
Mercury has transformed from a power company into a utility company so it was time to move from Energy Made Wonderful, to Bring The Buzz. This new platform is all about celebrating the amazing things you can do when you harness power, mobile and broadband.
This a relatively new platform we laucnhed with a TV ad but this will be built on in the coming years.
We launched this new platform with a story that set up a bromance between a super knowledgable Mitre 10 bloke and a keen but inexperienced customer. Pete and Grant are not only characters behind a popular brand ad, they are also used extensively in the retail layer. Pete and Grant might go in the future but this platform can live on and evolve for years.
A new platform Leisa and I created with the legendary DT.
Everything PAKn'SAVE do they do to save Kiwis money. It is a great example of a long lasting platform. It has evolved over the year but still remained true to itself. I loved working on this brand.
