You've probably heard them - requirements, reskins, scenarios, editor, etc., but what do they actually mean? This page is designed to help you learn what words mean in the Train Simulator community!
[xxx] - The name of a scenario creator which is used at the beginning of their scenarios' titles. Not applicable to all scenario creators and not necessary for the title of a scenario. Example: [PTS] = Peter's Train Sim.
Asset - A piece of Train Simulator content which is created and used in a route or scenario. This term refers to a building or similar structure.
Editor - The feature in Train Simulator used to edit scenarios or routes. They are available to all users of Train Simulator as they are packaged within the game and available from the start-up menu.
Enhancement Pack - A term which almost always applies to content produced by Armstrong Powerhouse, an Enhancement Pack is a piece of Train Simulator content which improves an existing piece of content through adding functionality and potentially improving textures.
Freeware - A piece of Train Simulator content which, on its own, is free. This applies to all Peter's Train Sim content and may other content-producers' catalogues.
Kuju - The developer of Train Simulator content before Dovetail Games. They produced Railworks and made the Euro Loco & Asset Pack.
Railworks - The name of Train Simulator when it was developed by Kuju.
Payware - A piece of Train Simulator content which requires the user to purchase it. This applies to all content sold by Dovetail Games, most content sold by Just Trains, and all content sold by Armstrong Powerhouse, amongst other developers.
Reskin - A livery in Train Simulator which has been added to the game through users creating it in other programs using another livery as a base. This is both a noun and a verb.
Requirement - A piece of Train Simulator content which the user of another piece of content (almost always 3rd-party content) must own in order for the latter item to work. An example of a requirement for most routes is the European Loco & Asset Pack.
Route Editor - Part of the "Edit" section of Train Simulator, this allows users to create their own routes using any assets they have from routes in their collections.
Scenario - The services the user can play through in Train Simulator. They can be either real or fictional, and they can be made by anyone as they only require the scenario editor for them to be made. Other requirements are needed to allow the user to use various stock and assets.
Scenario Editor - Part of the "Edit" section of Train Simulator, this allows users to create scenarios for any route they have using any stock they deem to be appropriate.
Sound Pack - A term which almost always applies to content produced by Armstrong Powerhouse, a Sound Pack is a piece of Train Simulator content which improves an existing piece of content through adding different and better sounds to a locomotive, multiple unit, or coach.
Subscriptionware - A term applying to Train Simulator content which the user is given access to through a subscription to a site.
Texture - The appearance of an asset or locomotive in Train Simulator. Textures can have different qualities (e.g. poor) and the quality of the texture can affect the performance of the game.
Along with the terms in the dictionary above, there are a lot of abbreviations which are used in the Train Simulator community, often more than the words themselves. Below are some common abbreviations.
