My teaching philosophy emphasizes developing students that understand the what, how and why of Finance. The 'what' is the intellectual foundation graduates need to be competent in their chosen field – the basic knowledge. The 'how' is the skills – particularly the Excel and SQL skills that underlie much of modern business. And the 'why' is the ability to understand and critically think through a problem to a workable solution. My goal in the classroom is to help my students build a solid intellectual foundation, proficient technical skills, and an improved capacity for critical thinking. I characterize my teaching as experiential and hands on. In a typical class students come prepared with their laptops up and Excel open. We then spend the class in Excel working with real data to understand the day's concepts. I then post to my YouTube channel videos explaining how to create the day's Excel worksheet. My YouTube channel has gained popularity outside of my classes and has attracted hundreds of followers and over 100,000 views.
