Export Viewer is a Chrome browser extension developed and maintained by Peter Hudson (petermhudson@gmail.com). This privacy policy explains what data the extension accesses, how it is used, and how it is protected.
When you drag and drop a file into the Export Viewer or select one with "Browse Computer," the extension reads that file's contents in your browser tab locally on your device. The file content is used only to display the data in an interactive table and to copy it to your clipboard when you request the Google Sheets export. The file content is never transmitted to any server, stored persistently, or shared with any third party.
The extension monitors Chrome's download events to detect when a file matching common export formats (.csv, .tsv, .export.text) has finished downloading. When a match is detected, the extension saves the following to Chrome's local storage (on your device only):
The filename of the downloaded file (e.g., students.csv)
The file size in bytes
The timestamp of the download
This information is used solely to display a "Recent Export Ready" reminder card in the side panel. It is stored in chrome.storage.local, which remains on your device and is not synced to any server. It is overwritten each time a new matching file is detected and is deleted when you uninstall the extension.
If you drag the floating "Export Viewer" badge on supported admin pages, its screen position is saved in the page's localStorage under the key ps_badge_pos so it stays where you put it across page loads. This preference is stored locally in your browser and is never transmitted.
Export Viewer does not:
Collect, transmit, or store the contents of any files you open
Track your browsing history or visited URLs
Collect any personally identifiable information (names, student IDs, email addresses, etc.) from the files you view
Use cookies or tracking technologies
Connect to any external server, API, or analytics service
Share any data with third parties
Export Viewer does not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or data services.
When you click "Open blank Google Sheet," the extension opens https://sheets.new — a standard Google URL — in a new browser tab. This is a normal browser navigation action. The extension does not send your data to Google; it only copies data to your clipboard. Pasting data into Google Sheets is subject to Google's own privacy policy at https://policies.google.com/privacy.
The only data stored by this extension is the filename and metadata of the most recently detected download (described above). This data:
Is stored locally on your device in Chrome's local storage
Is overwritten each time a new export file is detected
Is permanently deleted when you uninstall the extension from Chrome
You can also clear it manually at any time via Chrome's extension storage by removing and reinstalling the extension, or by clearing Chrome's site data for the extension.
If we make changes to how this extension handles data, we will update this page and increment the "Last updated" date above. Significant changes will also be noted in the Chrome Web Store version history.
