No one should ever be forced to wear a mask.
Why?
Because we wouldn't need the dictates of government if we were willing to follow the dictates of everyday common decency, the kind of decency operative when we don't push the frail and elderly to get ahead in a line, the kind of decency operative when we give to the poor or obey the speed limit or avoid driving when drinking. Who would argue that these acts of decency are somehow anti-democratic and show a diminution of our freedoms?
If someone who knows her field tells any of us that wearing a mask can prevent the spread of the virus, and thus reduce the potential for suffering and death, what decent person would say "no" and thus force the government to make rules? I know people who refuse to wear masks and rant about how the government is enforcing some Communist plot, who, at the same time would never even dream of inflicting gratuitous violence on anyone, and who would almost surely help someone in need or protect someone in danger. In other words, these anti-maskers I know do, in their histories and their daily lives, observe the rules of human decency consistently and, in fact, effortlessly. What has come over them now? What cozening fiend has poisoned their thinking and their actions?
