As Shown left, I am using a router and safety device to make intricate cuts into the sides of the wood. These cuts allowed me to make doors with central panels. The cuts on the different boards will fit to make a joint and eventually form a door.

This picture shows me leaning forward to see where the blade of a miter saw will touch the wood I was about to cut. Miter saws are used to make simple cuts across the grain of the wood. Miter saws are also widely used to make angles cuts, as it swivels at the base. My mentor made the first cut to show me how the saw worked, then I proceeded to finish the rest of the cuts.

After cutting boards to length, I drilled pilot holes for screws, added glue to the sides I was binding, screwed and glued them together, and clamped them together for stability during the binding process. My mentor showed me how to square my project and make it level during this time.

After binding pieces together, the project started to take form and look like a TV stand. Next, sanding and painting needed to be done. For this, I brought the project to my house to finish it. This gave me more flexible working hours and constant access to the project for continued work.

The top was primarily sanded with a 200 grit sandpaper orbital sander while the rest of the project with its cracks and corners was sanded using 200 grit sandpaper. Sanding the project was very time-consuming and it took focus to sand every crack while staying in line with the grain of the wood.

After the top was sanded, the rest of the project was sanded smooth to the touch. This allowed me to move into the start of the painting phase. seen here are the orbital sander and sandpaper that I used to sand the project before painting.

I started painting the cabinet doors, cabinet shelves, and back pieces of the stand before I moved on to the main portion of the project and the top. This picture and the one below were taken after two coats of paint had been applied.

If you look closely at these two pictures, you can tell that the project needed at least one more coat because of the faint streaks of discoloration visible through the paint. After the third coat was applied, the streaks became near invisible and ended up clearing out nicely.

To the right is the top of my project after it had been sanded and stain had been hand-rubbed onto it. After this, and shown in the next picture, a clear coat of finish was applied. The purpose of the clear coat is to protect the wood and stain underneath.

After the pieces dried, the top was sanded lightly with 220 grit sandpaper to smoothen the finish and then I wiped it with a tack cloth to remove dust. Another coat of finish was applied for more protection.

My original intention was to put a sliding barn door rail on the front of the project for the two cabinet doors. After searching online for a considerable amount of time, I could not find one that would fit my project and look nice. I decided to make the switch to hinges. The hinges were somewhat more difficult to apply than I thought.

After the hinges and handles were applied to the doors, the top was the last piece to the puzzle. The back of the top was screwed to the rest of the project by hidden screws. I put some wood glue under the top for a better binding of the materials. I then put on some clamps to hold it tight while the binding process took its course.
