What is the National Honor Society?

Membership in NHS is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. Chapters in more than 15,000 high schools across the nation strive towards the Society's goals of scholarship, leadership, service, and character.

NHS is one of the very few high school organizations that is universally recognized by college admissions officers and scholarship committees as being challenging and elite.

Volunteering and community involvement also fosters personal satisfaction and contentment as well as good citizenship through a lifelong commitment to volunteerism.

How do I register?

Learn more about registration here.

Am I eligible to join NHS?

If you would like to join the National Honor Society at Plano East, you must be a senior, junior, or an IB sophomore— and you must have been enrolled for a period equivalent to 1 semester at Plano East. Additionally, you must have, and maintain, a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.6 on Plano ISD's scale. Upon meeting grade level, enrollment, and GPA standards, you'll then be considered based on your service, leadership, and character; view more information on membership requirements here.

I’m a freshman this year. Can I join NHS?

No. Plano ISD high schools do not offer NHS to freshmen. This is because induction into NHS is partly based on your GPA, or grade point average. A student’s GPA must be at least 3.60 in order to be inducted. Students have the opportunity to utilize freshman year to boost their GPA.

If you're a freshman in Plano East's IB program, you can start working towards induction and membership the fall of your sophomore year. Keep an eye out for information on the September informational meeting for new members!

What are NHS’s core values?

We strongly believe in our “Four Pillars of NHS”:

1) Character - NHS seeks to develop students with responsible citizenship demonstrated in all their actions.

2) Scholarship - We want to create an enthusiasm for knowledge, characterized by a commitment to learning.

3) Leadership - Promoting direction by taking the initiative to aid others in our daily activities is core to our philosophy.

4) Service - Members should stimulate a personal desire to render service for the benefit of those in need.

Who do I ask if I have questions throughout the year about NHS?

Please ask any of your NHS officers — we are happy to help. Meet the officer team here. Alternatively, you may talk to Plano East's NHS Advisers, Mr. Carter and Ms. Sardar.

Are there dues to join NHS?

Yes. Dues for the school year are $15 and must be submitted by both returning and new members in order to maintain or gain membership.

What’s the difference between NHS and NJHS?

NHS, the National Honor Society, is a high-school program. NJHS, the National Junior Honor Society, is typically offered at the middle-school level.

When will NHS officer applications be released? Who can apply?

The Executive Committee typically releases NHS officer applications in early spring of each year. Students who are going to be juniors the subsequent school year are eligible to apply. Check this website regularly for more details.
