The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global goals adopted by all UN member states in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They are designed to address a wide range of global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice.
The SDGs can be used as a framework by all teachers to promote global learning in the classroom. They are cross-disciplinary and focus on issues that affect all communities at local, national, and global scales. Understanding and responding to these challenges help students see the interconnectedness of our world.
SDG #16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
This activity aligns with SDG #16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions because it emphasizes the role of perspective-taking in fostering peace, understanding, and cooperation among people from diverse backgrounds.
SDG #16 promotes inclusive societies, access to justice, and effective, accountable institutions. Perspective-taking contributes to these goals by encouraging individuals to understand different viewpoints, recognize biases, and engage in meaningful dialogue—key elements for reducing conflict, promoting human rights, and strengthening social cohesion.
Promotes Peace and Conflict Resolution – Understanding multiple perspectives helps individuals and communities resolve conflicts in a fair and non-violent manner, fostering more just and peaceful societies.
Encourages Justice and Equity – By considering how different social, economic, and cultural backgrounds affect people’s experiences, individuals become more aware of inequities and are more likely to advocate for fair policies and inclusive institutions.
Strengthens Social Cohesion – Recognizing shared humanity while valuing diversity encourages trust and cooperation, which are essential for strong, stable societies.
Enhances Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving – Understanding complex global issues from multiple perspectives leads to more informed decision-making and innovative solutions.
Builds Effective Institutions – Leaders and policymakers who engage in perspective-taking create more inclusive and fair institutions that represent and serve diverse populations.
By developing global competency through perspective-taking, students become more engaged and responsible global citizens, contributing to a more just, peaceful, and sustainable world—directly supporting the mission of SDG #16.
