I'm a passionate educator with over a decade's experience in both adult and higher education. My academic background includes a PhD in Education and Social Justice, a master's degree in International Law (LLM), a first degree in Law (LLB), and professional teaching qualifications in English to adults: CELTA and PGCE with the full diploma for teaching in the lifelong learning sector.
Prior to joining King’s, I taught at the University of Leeds, where I supported undergraduate and postgraduate students in academic writing, language development, and study skills across diverse learning contexts including postgraduate Law and Business and Academic English for undergraduate study to STEM students.
My work now continues in supporting postgraduate students as they navigate academic, personal, and professional transitions, with particular interest in confidence, voice, and belonging in higher education. Alongside teaching and academic advising, I write for academic and public audiences and develop practical, research-informed resources designed to support students and educators in complex educational environments, with a growing interest in how emerging technologies, particularly AI, are shaping student voice, authorship and identity.
When I’m not teaching or doing education research, you’ll often find me sitting in the courtyard of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, in prayer at the Holy Mosque in Makkah, Saudi Arabia or wandering through the vibrant souqs of Marrakesh, Fes or Casablanca with a story to write at my fingertips.
I’m also an avid reader with a long-standing fascination with Islamic history and Sufi traditions, and I will never turn down a good tea or coffee chat with meaningful conversation.
Beyond my academic work, I share more personal reflections through Unveiling with Dr Nafisa, a space where I explore identity, voice, and lived experience beyond the academe.
I am fluent in Hausa and at home, I fully embrace my reputation as a crazy cat lady.
