2022 marks twenty years since the original release of Jeff McMahan’s The Ethics of Killing: Problems at the Margins of Life (Oxford University Press). From the very moment it was published, The Ethics of Killing received widespread acclaim by the philosophical community. Reviews and critical notes on The Ethics of Killing can be found in a plethora of renowned international academic journals as well as other major literary outlets, such as The Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Canadian Journal of Philosophy, Ethics, London Review of Books, Notre Dame Philosophical Reviews, Philosophy and Public Affairs, and many others more. In an essay published in Utilitas, The Ethics of Killing is described as “a most impressive, rigorously argued analysis of questions regarding the morality of killing”. Yet, despite having amassed incredible success and influence amongst global scholars, and even received a translation to Brazilian Portuguese, in 2011, few were the Brazilian philosophers who have engaged directly with McMahan’s theses. In light of such a considerable philosophical gap, this conference aims to gather both Brazilian and overseas thinkers to reflect on and celebrate such an important work.
