Painting flowers is a challenge if you are a painter. Over the past year, I observed my garden in Palo Alto and recorded the activity in a series of paintings.
Born in Philadelphia and having lived on the East Coast the majority of my life, I find this climate astonishing. I am excited by how different the seasons are in Northern California. I see plants blooming here when they would be dormant back East. Constant surprises in my garden are celebrations for me, making winter non-existent.
The California quality of light is vibrant and stunning, and I attempt to capture it in my paintings. Mixing colors and layering paint are key to recreating what I see. I am trying to make sense of my new surroundings through this activity.
As I painted the individual flowers in my garden on Hamilton Avenue, something strange started to happen. My mind began to wander to memories of flowers from the past, making connections. I painted these connections in this series of larger paintings, incorporating memories of place. Perhaps this was a way of finding the familiar in the unfamiliar.
In the end, I think of my eye like a camera observing my surroundings, and my hand is like an instrument, just producing things.
