Piggery Production and the Empowerment of Rural People in Ward 21 of Gutu District

This is a research paper by Bernard Chazovachii, a lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University, that evaluates the contribution of piggery production project to the empowerment of rural people in ward 21 of Gutu District. The paper uses quantitative and qualitative data collected through questionnaires, interviews, and field observations. The paper reveals that the piggery project, which was implemented by Action Faim, a non-governmental organization, provided various benefits to the participants, such as meat, manure, infrastructures, and financial capital. These benefits enabled the participants to enhance their human capital, increase their income, diversify their livelihood portfolios, and improve their food security. However, the paper also identifies some limitations of the project, such as the exclusion of some vulnerable groups (women, children, elderly, HIV and AIDS victims), the lack of training and marketing support, and the dependence on external inputs. The paper recommends that for such projects to succeed, there should be inclusion of all the people in the village willing to participate regardless of their age, sex, marital status, and health; training and marketing of products should be strengthened; and local resources should be utilized.
