If you want a quick, vibration-dampening solution for tight spaces that simplifies brake pad reassembly, choose Permatex 80077; if you need a comprehensive two-part system to lubricate guide pins and prevent heat-induced squeal for a complete service, choose FOTU 661+561.
• Permatex 80077: Its biggest strength is the aerosol format that delivers precise coverage in hard-to-reach caliper pockets with zero mess, but its trade-off is that it offers only a single-step application focused on noise reduction rather than mechanical lubrication. This pick is for the DIYer who needs a fast fix for squealing pads in cramped engine bays without removing every component.
• FOTU 661+561: Its biggest strength is the dual-tube design providing specific formulas for rubber boots and anti-squeal protection, ensuring long-term stability, but its trade-off is the bulkier packaging which can be awkward to maneuver in very confined wheel wells compared to a spray nozzle. This pick is for the technician or serious enthusiast performing a full brake job who wants to address both pin movement and pad contact points simultaneously.
The Permatex 80077 Disc Brake Quiet is designed with a singular focus: stopping the annoying high-pitched squeal that plagues many disc brake systems. It achieves this by dampening vibrations specifically at the interface between the caliper and the brake pad. If your car has been making noise while slowing down, this product targets that exact friction point. The aerosol can format is not just a convenience; it is a functional design choice that allows you to reach deep into the brake assembly where your hand cannot fit. You simply spray the back of the pad or the caliper pocket, and the formula creates a thin, protective layer that absorbs the shaking that causes sound.
Who should buy this? It is ideal for someone dealing with a minor squeak who wants to avoid a full disassembly of the brake system. Because it works on the pad surface, it fits perfectly for tight spaces where removing the caliper to grease individual pins would be a nightmare. It also claims compatibility with anti-lock brake systems, which means you do not have to worry about interfering with modern safety electronics when you apply it.
However, you should skip this product if you are looking for a complete maintenance overhaul. While it protects against corrosion and allows for easier disassembly later, it does not contain a dedicated lubricant for the metal guide pins. If your brakes are squealing because the pins are dry or corroded, this spray will not solve the root mechanical issue. It is a targeted treatment, not a general-purpose grease. If your project involves rebuilding a brake caliper from scratch or replacing all rubber dust boots, this single can will leave parts of your job unfinished.

The FOTU 661+561 set takes a different approach by recognizing that brake noise often stems from two distinct problems: moving metal rubbing against metal, and pads vibrating against the rotor. This kit includes two separate tubes, each engineered for a specific task. The 661 tube contains silicone grease, which is critical for the rubber components of the caliper. Silicone is chemically stable and resists high temperatures, meaning it won't melt away or degrade the rubber dust boots that protect the internal mechanisms. The 561 tube is an anti-squeal grease designed to coat the back of the brake pads, preventing the abnormal occlusion that happens when pads overheat and bind.
This product is for the buyer who wants a professional-grade result. The inclusion of tools worn by the product indicates a focus on precision application; you can spread the grease evenly exactly where needed without getting your hands dirty. The shelf life of five years is a significant advantage for anyone stocking up on supplies, ensuring the grease remains effective even if you don't use it immediately. By addressing both the guide pins and the pad interface, this set delivers stable disc-brake service performance that goes beyond just silencing a noise. It treats the hardware as a system rather than just a symptom.
You might consider skipping this option if you are in a situation where space is extremely limited and you cannot fit the two tubes or the applicator tools into the wheel well. While the total weight is lighter than the Permatex can at roughly half a pound, the physical presence of two distinct containers can be cumbersome. Furthermore, if you already have high-quality silicone grease on hand and only need something for the pad surface, buying this full set might be redundant. It is a comprehensive kit, so if you only need one piece of the puzzle, you are paying for features you will not use.
• Best for tight spaces → Permatex 80077 wins due to the aerosol nozzle allowing access to deep crevices without needing to maneuver multiple tubes.
• Best for full caliper maintenance → FOTU 661+561 is superior because it covers both the rubber boots and the pad backing, whereas the other only addresses the pad.
• Best for rubber boot safety → FOTU 661+561 uses dedicated silicone grease that is explicitly compatible with rubber, reducing the risk of swelling or degradation.
• Best for ease of cleanup → Permatex 80077 requires less setup; there are no tubes to open or caps to remove, just a simple spray.
• Best for long-term storage → FOTU 661+561 boasts a five-year shelf life, making it a better choice for garage inventory.
• Best for ABS compatibility → Both products claim compatibility, but Permatex explicitly lists this feature in its primary bullet points for peace of mind.
• Best for tool integration → FOTU 661+561 comes with built-in applicators to ensure even distribution, a feature missing from the spray can.
• Best value for a complete job → FOTU 661+561 provides more utility per dollar since it solves two potential failure points in one purchase.
I recommend the FOTU 661+561 set for anyone performing a real brake service, especially when the goal is longevity and reliability. While the Permatex spray is undeniably handy for quick fixes in tight spaces, it feels like a band-aid for a mechanical problem. The FOTU kit addresses the actual mechanics of how a brake caliper moves and interacts with heat, offering silicone protection for the rubber and a specialized grease for the pads. In my opinion, treating the guide pins and the pad surface with purpose-built formulas is the only way to ensure the brakes stay quiet and perform well for the long haul.
Use caution if applying directly to rubber seals.
Yes, the product description notes that tools worn by the product are included to help spread the grease evenly, ensuring you don't waste material or apply it unevenly.
It is not indicated for drum brake usage.
The FOTU 661+561 set explicitly states a shelf life of 5 years, whereas the Permatex can does not list a specific expiration timeline in the provided specifications.
