Period for the Planet

What is a reusable menstrual pad?

A reusable menstrual pad is a product that is made out of absorbent fabric in the shape of a commercially produced menstrual pad that is used to absorb the menstrual flow. Reusable pads can be washed and reused for up to 7 years and replace around 170 disposable pads in it's lifetime.

Is it gross?

No! Using reusable cloth menstrual pads is not gross. Women have been using cloth pads for millennia before disposable pads were invented. And when you compare these to reusable diapers that people used and still use, pads are not gross.

Are they difficult to take care of?

No, they are no more difficult to take care of than regular laundry item. Each pad washing routine may vary from person to person as some may want to soak them in water before putting them in the washing machine, and others may want to separate their pads from their other clothes when doing a load of laundry.

Why should we use Reusable Menstrual products?

Planet

Around 12 billion pads and 12 billion tampons are used and disposed of in the United States alone, according to Stanford.org. This is a very large number when you consider the female population of America is just 166 million. All of these single use plastic products end up in our landfill and our oceans and will never break down completely. Nothing breaks down in a landfill due to the compaction of garbage in a landfill, and in the ocean the plastics may just break down into microplastics which still poses as a threat to marine life and humans. Why would we contribute such a large amount to the pollution problem when we can use reusable menstrual products such as cloth pads or menstrual cups?

Purse

On average, one woman may spend $3,000-$5,000 on disposable menstrual products in their lifetime depending on their flow. If one switches to buying reusable menstrual products, they can save around $2,300 on period products in their lifetime. If they make their own menstrual pads, they can save even more!

People

Many women find reusable menstrual pads to be more convenient. There is no more need for emergency drug store runs when you run out of period products!

Also almost every person who switches to reusable products notices a significant decrease in cramping. There are many unknown chemicals that may be in certain pads or tampons that could be triggering these unnecessary cramps.

Yet another pro to reusables is that they feel more comfortable against your body and are 100% customizable to your needs. First, they can be made of whichever fabric you prefer so that it will be much more breathable against your skin than plastic pads. As well as the fact that cloth pads can be made in any shape and size whatever the user may need or prefer.
