Pepin Family Foundation
Nonprofit & Philanthropic Foundation
Pepin Family Foundation is a family-led nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life throughout the Tampa Bay region. Its work focuses on education, health care, mental health wellness, transportation initiatives, and direct community support. The organization’s charitable activities began during the 1980s through the involvement of the Pepin family and were later formalized as Pepin Family Foundation, Inc. Since that time, the foundation has continued to support programs that address practical needs across the community while maintaining a steady commitment to service.
Historical Origins and Family Legacy
The story of the Pepin Family Foundation is closely connected to the personal experiences and values of the Pepin family. Long before the organization existed as a formal nonprofit entity, Art and Polly Pepin were already involved in charitable efforts across the Tampa Bay region. Their early work reflected a long-standing interest in helping organizations that supported education, health, and community development.
In the late 1980s, a serious health event within the Pepin family heightened awareness of the importance of heart health and access to proper medical care. The experience highlighted the need for specialized cardiovascular treatment and encouraged continued involvement in efforts to strengthen cardiac services in the region. What began as a personal challenge gradually led to broader community support for medical programs.
Tom Pepin worked alongside his parents and helped guide the family’s charitable efforts toward greater structure. One of the earliest steps in this process was the creation of a memorial fund in honor of Tom Pepin’s close friend, Chris Fredo. Initially formed as a tribute, the effort gradually expanded as the family became aware of additional needs within the community. Over time, this work grew into the organization now recognized as the Pepin Family Foundation.
Mission, Vision, and Core Principles
The Pepin Family Foundation operates with a mission to support education, health care, transportation initiatives, and mental health and wellness services. Many of its programs place special attention on professionals who serve on the front line, including individuals working in public safety, health care, and emergency response roles.
Its vision includes expanding access to specialized education for individuals with learning disabilities, advancing cardiac care and medical research, and ensuring that mental health and wellness services are available to first responders and their families.
Organizational Structure and Operations
Pepin Family Foundation, Inc. operates within the nonprofit and philanthropic sector through a focused internal structure. Although the organization employs a small staff, its work extends across a wide network through partnerships with hospitals, schools, nonprofit organizations, and public safety agencies throughout the Tampa Bay region.
The foundation’s approach to operations emphasizes cooperation and direct involvement. Members of the family remain actively engaged in governance and maintain working relationships with partner organizations that collaborate with the foundation on community programs.
Leadership and Governance
Leadership within the Pepin Family Foundation reflects a multi-generational structure. Tom Pepin is the founder and remains involved in the organization’s work. His long-standing presence in the Tampa Bay community provides valuable insight into local challenges and opportunities for meaningful support.
The family has also expanded its governance by creating the Pepin Family Office. This office helps manage philanthropic activities and reviews organizations that align with the family’s priorities for long-term impact and responsible stewardship. Former Senate President Tom Lee manages the office.
Tina Pepin serves as Executive Director and represents the next generation of leadership within the organization. Her role includes overseeing daily operations, ensuring that programs remain aligned with the foundation’s mission, and guiding thoughtful growth. In addition to her responsibilities at the foundation, Tina Pepin serves on several community boards and advisory committees.
She also serves as secretary of the Pepin Academies Foundation and participates in the AdventHealth West Florida Division Mental Health Advisory Committee and Tampa’s Cultural Assets Commission.
Advancing Heart Health and Medical Care
Heart health has remained an important focus of the Pepin Family Foundation since its early years. In 1986, Tom Pepin and Arthur Pepin made matching pledges totaling $500,000 to support the development of a specialized cardiac facility. This support helped establish the Pepin Heart Hospital and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Research Institute. Today, the Pepin Heart Hospital is recognized for its advanced cardiovascular services and is considered one of the leading specialty hospitals in the Southeast region.
Education and Individualized Learning Initiatives
Education remains a key focus of the foundation’s work. In 1999, Pepin Academies was created to support students with learning disabilities who needed a more individualized educational environment. The program began with 13 students and focused on both academic instruction and life skills development.
Pepin Academies operates as a nonprofit, tuition-free public charter school serving students from third through twelfth grade. The program also offers a transitional job-training initiative for young adults ages 18 to 22. Over time, the school has expanded significantly and now serves more than 1,200 students while graduating over 850 individuals.
Mental Health and Resiliency Programs
As awareness of mental health challenges has increased, the Pepin Family Foundation has expanded its support for mental health wellness and resiliency programs. These initiatives focus especially on individuals working in demanding roles, including professionals in health care, law enforcement, and emergency services.
Community Giving and Strategic Partnerships
Beyond its primary areas of focus, the Pepin Family Foundation continues to support a wide range of community initiatives. The foundation works with hospitals, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and public safety agencies that contribute to community development throughout the Tampa Bay region.
Organizations supported by the foundation include AdventHealth Tampa’s Pepin Heart Hospital, Pepin Academies, the Chiefs of Police Foundation, the Tampa Police Department and RISE Tampa, Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, Moffitt Cancer Center, the Crisis Center and 211 Hope Line, Arise Alliance, Able Trust, Hands Across the Bay, Hook A Hero, Leadership Tampa Bay, the Hillsborough Education Foundation, and the Women’s Conference of Florida.

One of the honors received is the RCG Community Impact Award, which recognizes organizations that help strengthen the region through consistent engagement. Through continued partnerships and thoughtful support, the organization remains committed to programs that benefit individuals and families across the Tampa Bay area.
