We are pleased to resume our regular Monday night classes for the Fall semester:
7 - 8 pm: Intermediate class
8 - 9 pm: Beginner class
9 pm onwards: open Practica
Intermediate class is great for dancers with some experience. Beginner class is perfect for dancers who are new to tango, or would like a refresher. The Practica is open to all members regardless of level.
You are welcome to take your first class for free before signing up for club membership.
For class locations, please subscribe to our listserv below or write to us at PennTango@gmail.com.
Get excited for our semester-end milonga this Monday!! We have added a small class at the beginning and there will be snacks (bless). Some tips for what to wear at this event and other milongas:
CHOOSE:
breathable materials
clothing that makes you feel good
AVOID:
accessories or clasps if they can get caught on your partner's clothes
tops without straps (they can fall off in closed embrace)
pants that are too wide or that have turned-up cuffs (they can get caught on heels)
dresses that are too tight or too long (they can hinder movement)
After three weeks of instructor trials, we are pleased to announce Jake and Dasha as our new instructors going forward!
Jake Spatz founded TangoDC in 2005, became house teacher at the popular Eastern Market milonga in 2006, and became the instructor for the University of Maryland’s Terrapin Tango Club in 2010. He has performed in festivals, feature-length plays, commercials, and live shows at the Kennedy Center, Disney World, and Washington Performing Arts Society. He continues to hone his craft by attending masterclasses, and is also a noted tango DJ and translator of tango lyrics.
Dasha Khripkova began DJing in Philadelphia in 2008, and after moving to DC she co-hosted and taught at Eastern Market with Jake since 2010. They were featured dancers in the How Philly Moves mural at the Philadelphia Airport. Dasha and Jake moved to Philadelphia in 2023, and they run Fairmount Tango Club's Milonga Corazón every 2nd Saturday.
Our previous teachers, Lori Coyle and Howard Schwartz, are unfortunately taking a break from teaching right now. We thank Lori and Howard for having taught us for so many years.
