We are excited to share with you our Curriculum Summary, bringing learning at Penllwyn Primary to life!
Wellbeing is at the heart of our school ethos here at Penllwyn Primary. Our children need to experience social, emotional and physical wellbeing to thrive and engage successfully with their education. We want to develop a culture where all children have a voice and have the opportunity to play an active role in decisions that affect their learning and wellbeing. Furthermore, we endeavour to foster strong working relationships with parents and the community offering a comprehensive range of opportunities for them to be involved.
It is important to note that our Curriculum journey is far from over. We will be updating this journey map regularly to reflect the ongoing work by staff and stakeholders.
Our curriculum is everything a learner experiences in pursuit of the four purposes. It is not simply what we teach, but how we teach and crucially, why we teach it.
We wanted to develop a curriculum that was authentic, flexible and relevant for all our learners. Having interrogated the 4 purposes, we realised it was essential for our learners to first develop a strong understanding of their local community and the role they play. Additionally, instilling a sense of belonging as a Welsh citizen was equally important to our curriculum design. Furthermore, we wanted to allow learners the opportunity to explore the wider world. Our curriculum model reflects this vision with all teaching and learning developing an understanding of My Community, My Wales and My World.
Our Curriculum provides a breadth of learning, drawing together a range of experiences, knowledge and skills across a range of contexts, topics and activities, making links across Areas. Staff have worked hard to develop a Curriculum overview that covers all of the statements of what matters from age 3 to 16, providing engagement with their key concepts in a developmentally appropriate way. Our concepts allow learners to explore topics and activities through different lenses, allowing learners to experience a topic holistically, helping them to make stronger links across content, disciplines and Areas.

All staff at Penllwyn Primary School recognise that assessment is an intrinsic part of the curriculum with the purpose of supporting every learner to make progress.
Effective assessment of learners contributes to a holistic picture of the individual, which includes both academic progress and learner well-being. It ensures that learners are supported and challenged appropriately and that barriers to learning are considered. The process of assessing learner progression is a continuous one, fully integrated into daily learning. Practitioners use the principles of progression and descriptions of learning to understand what it means for learners to progress, and use this to inform learning, teaching and assessment.
Engaging all stakeholders to inform curriculum development
Our curriculum is built in co-construction with learners, their families and the wider community. Throughout our curriculum development phase we have asked all stakeholders to consider the following:
What should we teach and why?
How should we teach it?
This is an ongoing conversation for the whole school and beyond, engaging with parents/carers and the wider community, including business, academia and public services. Online surveys, using Microsoft Forms, are shared termly in order to gather stakeholder views. The results are analysed by all staff and carefully considered when planning authentic teaching and learning contexts. At Penllwyn Primary School we strongly believe that selection of curriculum content should consider learners’ input and should provide increasing opportunities for learners to help direct their learning as they progress. Participation is a key principle of the UNCRC and enabling participation will create an engaging curriculum that responds to learners’ interests, needs and priorities.
Cluster Vision...
Working with our cluster provides important opportunities to share learning and develop joined-up experiences for learners across their learning journey. To ensure equity for learners within the Islwyn cluster we felt it was important that there is a shared understanding of the fundamentals of curriculum design. Therefore we have developed a cluster curriculum vision. The Islwyn cluster is committed to realising the four purposes of the curriculum through:
Instilling pride in our learners, of their communities and identity, developing their sense of ‘Cynefin’
Placing wellbeing at the heart of our schools, in order to shape positive futures
Nurturing success in order to open a world of opportunities
Promoting equity and equality whilst celebrating diversity
Inspiring curiosity and igniting a love of lifelong learning
Empowering learners to build connections across their learning; enabling achievement for all.
Our curriculum will be regularly reviewed (termly) responding to the outputs of professional inquiry, changing needs of learners and social contexts and needs. This process will involve all stakeholders, providing opportunities for feedback, professional discussions and ongoing revision where necessary.
