Is there any way to select the type of ink when you add a handwritten sketch to EverNote for iPad? I know you can change color and thickness, but the style of the ink is like a fountain pen, with drastic changes in thickness. I an not sure if it is my handwriting style, but it makes my notes pretty illegible. Can you choose to have a ballpoint per, or consistent thickness to your stroke?

I haven't looked at Penultimate in a long time, but am a heavy user of GoodNotes 5. However, there are definitely use cases where I want to jot down some handwritten notes in an existing EverNote Note... but the "sketch" feature makes the text barely legible (with my handwriting).

Evernote and Apple Notes are pretty much the same, I just observed one difference: EN sometimes straightens lines and shapes, which Notes never seems to do. So I am not sure whether they really use the same pencil engine - or EN runs some additional stuff.

So I think the sketching in EN is working, but can not replace a good note taking app. What I did not test is how good the OCRing of my handwriting works. With GN5 it works amazingly good, and when you export your notes, you can send the OCR with it to have it still searchable in whatever app you send it to.

I went through the new brush set, testing marks to get a feel for them and then I created a layer above the frog pencil base to start drawing lines and shading details as I would when hand drawing after initial base shading is done.

Thanks, Jodie! I have an inkjet printer and it works fine. Sometimes when burnishing the backside with a pencil, I have to go over it twice in two different directions to get a good visible transfer. And I am definitely into cheap! ?

Sometimes a line will disappear if you gently scrub the line with the wet pigment you are painting that area with.

Also I have found that some lines under a light wash ( dried) can be erased with a soft erasure, But once you put most yellows over pencil lines they are there forever.:)

One way is to minimize the pencil lines after you have your picture drawn. I use a kneaded eraser to gently roll or pat over the lines. That picks up the excess graphite, but still leaves enough of a line for you to follow. These will be covered by most colors as you apply your paint.

However, as Pearl said, once a yellow paint is put over the graphite, that seems to make it impermeable to erasures, so it might be best to erase the pencil line completely before applying yellow to that area.

I have used watercolor pencils to sketch instead of pencil lead. I try to use a color close to what will be in the painting so that when I do paint, I can merge the markings from the watercolor pencil into the painting.

I find that it is almost impossible to cover the lead from a pencil with watercolor paint, that is why I switched.

I also use the kneaded eraser to pick up any extra markings.

I do not mind pencil marks under my paintings and usually use a 3H or 5H pencil. I have learned to use a dull rounded point and to draw with light pressure. I have used a water soluble graphite pencil, but it tended to contaminate lighter colors.
