The Junior League and the Pelham Public schools are proud to present a year long series of events related to the book 'The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind' by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. The story is about a young boy in Malawi who was forced to drop out of school after a terrible famine. He continued to learn by visiting the village library and he became determined to improve the lives of the people in his community by building a windmill. He succeeded and was able to bring electricity and water to his village.

Not only are there a number of community events throughout the year that highlight stories and themes from the book but children in grades K-12 will be engaged in learning related to the book in lots of subjects. Check out the information provided by the school district about integration into the curriculum so that you can talk to your kids about the book and how they are applying it in school. Curriculum Development and Books for the children was generously funded by the PEF.

In conjunction with the powerful art exhibit related to sustainability we are partnering with the Art Center so that your kids can learn about and create African Art.
1pm – 2pm: African Mask Art Workshop with Mecca Alim
Create a beautiful mask with patterns inspired by the incredible country of Malawi! Use feathers, mixed media, glitter, and sequins to make them sparkle, colorful and detailed as much as your heart desires.
Fee: $10 [Pre-Registration for Workshop is Required]

1pm: African Dance by The Coleman Teen Dance Company
A 3 minute African Dance Piece inspired by the book.

About CTDC: The Coleman Teen Dance Company is an award winning student company that has performed all over the east coast including Lincoln Center (NYC), Lyndon Institute (VT), The Palace (CT), and is one of the few companies invited to be part of the Artists for World Peace at the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center. 2pm – 3pm: African Drum and Dance Workshop with VashtiDance Theater
This is an open level, fundamental workshop in African percussion and dance traditions. The workshop will focus on community engagement inspired by harvest celebrations and will feature movement and rhythms that have been preserved through oral tradition that tell the story of planting, harvest, community, and cooperation. Participants will learn both the rhythms and movements and build a sense of community through collaboration and celebration.

Join the Junior League of Scientists to build your own wind turbine. With activities appropriate from Pre-K to Middle School join us to build your own wind turbines and generate electricity. This event is free but don't forget to sign up here!

Get a taste of Traditional Malawian Food and feed the hungry. One of the driving motivators for William's ingenuity in the book is the terrible famine suffered by his friends and neighbors. There will be a zoom event where traditional Malawian dishes will be prepared. We will be hosting a town wide food drive.

Mr. Kamkwamba wrote the critically acclaimed book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind which is the true story of his life. Mr. Kamkwamba grew up in central Malawi and taught himself how to build a wind turbine from scrap to bring electricity to his small village during a famine. Dr. Rex Taibu, currently physics professor at Queensborough Community College grew up in Malawi and attended the University of Malawi. He moved to the United States to attend college at Western Michigan University where he earned a Ph.D. in Science Education. He will speak about his childhood in Malawi and his career path toward becoming a physics professor. This event is funded by the PEF.
