Peel is a small village located 15 km north of Bathurst on the road to Sofala and Mudgee. The area around the village of Peel began as a mining venture with the Ebenezer Quartz Mine launched in 1849. Prospectors from around the world came to Peel and looked for gold along Winburndale Rivulet and Clear Creek. There used to be seven pubs in Peel but now either they have been restored as homes or been demolished.
The Old School House in Peel is still here today and the funds raised from the Peel Jam goes to maintaining the school building, now used as a community hall, and the Recreation Reserve.
Peel was a common stop during the gold rush as prospectors and adventurers travelled to Hill End and Sofala to continue or begin their search for gold. It is a 73 kilometre journey from Bathurst to Hill End and takes just over an hour by car. Back then, it took several days, so people would also stop at Peel because there are two water ways, the Winburndale Rivulet and Clear Creek.
