    Maria Augusta Kutschera was born on January 26, 1905, in Vienna, Austria. She was orphaned at a young age and raised by an abusive uncle. She had a difficult childhood and rebelled against authority. She studied to become a teacher at a religious institute and joined a convent as a novice.
