P.E.A.s in a Pod (Performers, Educators, Artists Collective) is a creative collaboratory,
tended by Alexandra May (M.Ed), Amy Sawka (BA [Hons] Theatre), and Meredith Johnson (CAEA Stage Manager),
experienced artists and educators in their respective fields.
Having worked with young people throughout our careers, and having started as young people ourselves in theatre arts,
we’ve noticed a shift in the Calgary Arts Community over the past decade.
In particular, there has been a palpable redirection in programming by many of our established TYA organizations
to focus on theatre created by young people and with young people.
This, paired with the loss of many touring productions and the sunsetting of the Calgary Children’s Festival in 2018,
has resulted in a demonstrable gap in theatre created by professionals specifically for young people,
which we believe is necessary to round out arts access in our community and support our young people in civic engagement.
We are dedicated to creating innovative and impactful theatre that connects purposefully with young audiences.
At P.E.A.s in a Pod, we unite Performers, Educators, and Artists from diverse backgrounds to craft dynamic, impactful stories for the stage. Our mission is to create theatre that not only resonates deeply with audiences, but also expands the reach and relevance of theatre for young audiences (TYA) in Calgary, in Alberta, and beyond. We are as equally committed to the educational, historical, and societal dimensions of our work as we are to its artistic, aesthetic, and emotional power.
At P.E.A.s in a Pod we value:
Artistic Excellence
Intellectual Freedom within Psychologically Safe Environments
Respect for Self, Others, and Place
Centering Young People in Our Creative Processes

Integrating Diverse Artistic, Personal, and Educational Experiences
