Using eText, live class, study plans, videos, quizzes and online homework assignments, the students gain a deep understanding of transcendental functions, integration techniques and infinite series. They also engage more in class discussions and develop their independent learning and writing skills.

While university standards vary dramatically, here are several categories of classes you will likely find on your Gen Ed requirements. (All credit estimates assume a semester-hour system. Required credits would be different for universities operating under a quarter-hour system.) Note: The degree you choose can affect your General Education requirements. Candidates in the Elementary Education Program are involved in a rigorous program of study, which integrates content knowledge, skills, and pedagogy. Candidates are prepared to work in diverse cultural contexts through extensive field experiences and technological foci. The Mathematics Concentration prepares candidates for integrating a depth of knowledge of mathematical concepts into the curriculum of school-age children. Candidates are exposed to a range of concepts from foundational knowledge to higher levels of math appropriate for advanced learners. The Elementary Education degree with a concentration in Mathematics prepares candidates for teaching in public elementary schools and leads to an initial K-6 teaching license in the state of North Carolina.

That's where remedial--or developmental--classes come into the picture. At Piedmont these are considered "zero-level" courses. Students are directed into math, English, or reading developmental classes by virtue of their placement exam scores, but taking the classes isn't mandatory. Some students are disinclined to sign up because zero-level courses are not transferable to other institutions, nor do they count toward program completion.
