Save the Ancient Synagogue of Tripoli
"Gerbi cares very much and is desperately doing his best to ensure that the last remaining Synagogue will not be secretly destroyed altogether or converted into a modern library. It may very well be the last heritage site of Jewish history to save given how far back it dates!"
I met David Gerbi back in 2006 when he visited Johannesburg to promote his book, Making Peace with Gaddafi. I was struck by his sincerity and his efforts to appeal to a majority Muslim Arab population in Libya who were mainly opposed to the idea that Jews should ever return to Libya. I was shocked by how Jews were persecuted in Libya under the dictator, Muammar Gaddafi. The last Jew was his aunt who now rests in peace in a cemetery in Israel.
