The crisis in social care for the elderly in the UK has reached alarming levels exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and 14 years of Tory inaction. With an ageing population, the demand for elderly care services has surged, yet the system struggles to keep pace.
In the week that Lord Darzi delivered his review to the government on the state of the NHS and Social Care, reports show that over 400,000 older adults are currently waiting for social care assessments and services. One of the primary issues is underfunding. Many local authorities face severe budget constraints, leading to cuts in services and staff shortages. These financial challenges have resulted in a reliance on unpaid caregivers, often family members, who may not have the necessary training or support.
The quality of care varies significantly across the country with many elderly individuals experiencing inadequate support. Reports of neglect and insufficient facilities highlight the urgent need for reform. The NHS and social care providers are calling for increased funding and a long-term strategy to address these issues.
As the new Labour government is faced with this crisis it must prioritise the welfare of its' elderly population. A comprehensive approach, focusing on sustainable funding, workforce support, and improved care standards, is essential to ensure that the elderly receive the dignity and care they deserve.
The End Social Care Disgrace campaign has seven demands to provide a long-term resolution to the crisis:
The Government shall have responsibility for and duty to provide a National Care, Support and Independent Living Service (NaCSILS)
This will be fully funded through government investment and progressive taxation, free at the point of need and fully available to everyone living in this country.
Publicly provided and publicly accountable.
Mandated nationally, locally delivered
Identify and address needs of informal carers, family and friends providing personal support.
National NaCSILS employee strategy fit for purpose.
Support the formation of a taskforce on independent and supported living
Over now to the new government.
