Who or what is the Merseyside Pensioner's Association (MPA)?
The MPA are an organisation of pensioners from the Merseyside area, affiliated to the National Pensioners Convention (NPC).
MPA walks in the footsteps of NPC life-president, Jack Jones, whose famous pamphlet “The Case for Pensioners” inspired the MPA’s very own Manifesto, a second edition of which will launch soon.
MPA are an active, fully-functioning democratic organisation open to all pensioners in our area. They have their own constitution, meet fortnightly in Jack Jones House, and hold hybrid meetings to enable all of their members to attend either in person or on Zoom.
An AGM is held annually, open to all members who are encouraged to participate in whichever way they can.
Most MPA members are trade unionist and political activists, many having been blacklisted for activism during their lifetime.
The MPA has the proud motto of ‘Fighting For Pensioners and All Who Follow.” This is reflected in the many campaigns they have taken up, particularly the three-year campaign against council cuts to services which affect the poor, vulnerable and elderly people disproportionately.
MPA continue to be at the forefront of defending our NHS, the Save Liverpool Women’s Hospital campaign and The Save Our Buses campaign. They consistently campaign against war, against occupation and in defence of Palestine. MPA were one of the first organisations to campaign against Freeports, as well as the dangerous use of ‘Physician Associates’ and other under-qualified health professionals being used to create a two tier system within the NHS.
MPA have a healthy social media presence which provides a wide platform for the many powerful short films produced by their media team. These films of picket lines, demonstrations and public meetings etc, give a platform to workers and activists whose voices are excluded from the mainstream media. Some of these films have gone viral e.g. their famous confrontation with Keir Starmer in a Liverpool cafe, viewed 3.5m times.
Now that the U.K. has finally rid itself of a Conservative Government, the Merseyside Pensioner's Association finds its own members viciously targeted by the new Labour Government. The withdrawal of the Winter fuel allowance, tax changes which will impact pensioners, potential threats to the triple lock and even suggestions of the loss of the bus pass— there is much campaigning to do to defend the vulnerable.
MPA are a large organisation with over 120 members. Not only do they incur costs to hold hybrid meetings, pay for banners, placards, leaflets, flags, printing, postage etc, but they also provide members with social events such as Xmas and summer parties and days out.
MPA members are in their 60’s, 70’s and 80’s and the MPA is an important part of their lives, providing comradeship and a place to discuss issues which affect their lives and the lives of their families.
MPA can only maintain their activities with the aid of financial donations from organisations like yourselves who value the work that they do.
