What are misinformation and disinformation?
Misinformation is fake news that is created and spread in error, by somebody who doesn’t realise that it’s false.
Disinformation is fake news, created and spread deliberately by someone who is fully aware that it is false.
Here are some steps for PCS Merseyside ARMs members to help identify misinformation and disinformation:
Check the source
Start by examining the credibility of the source. Look for reputable news outlets, official websites, and trusted experts.
Verify supporting sources
Click on the links provided in the article or post to verify the information. Are the sources reliable and reputable?
Consider the author
Do a quick search on the author to determine their credibility and expertise. Look for their qualifications and previous work.
Check for bias
Be aware of any potential bias in the information. Biased sources may present information in a way that supports a particular agenda or viewpoint.
Fact-check
Use fact-checking websites or reliable sources to verify the accuracy of the information. Look for multiple sources that confirm the same information. Full Fact and Snopes are useful independent fact-checking sites.
Be sceptical of sensational claims
Misinformation often includes exaggerated or sensational claims. If something seems too good to be true or too shocking, it's worth investigating further.
Consider the date
Check the date of the information. Outdated or old news may no longer be relevant or accurate.
By following these steps you can become a more discerning consumer of information and protect yourself from falling victim to misinformation and disinformation. Remember, critical thinking and a healthy dose of scepticism are essential in today's information landscape.
