'The sitter (1609-1664), wo was a friend of Nicolaas Tulp ,

lived in Francker, Amsterdam and Leiden,

and from 1651 was professor of medicine in Leiden.

A year after his death, Rembrandt was commissioned to make an

engraved portrait to serve as a frontispiece to the sitter's edition of

Hippocrates.The contract specified an engraving and not an etching

(see Oud Holland, 1909 [xxvii] p.111),

and the print was not used.

Rembrandt based his portrait on the painting , dated 1660,

by Abraham van den Tempel, which is now in the Mauritshuis, The Hague.'
