PCDC Dance Tunes Sessions

Contra Dance Tunes Sessions

Do you play a melody instrument and want to learn some of those tunes you’ve been dancing to every week?   The Second Thursday Contra Dance Tunes Sessions could be for you. We learn two or sometimes three tunes per session by ear the way traditional music is usually learned. The sessions are taught by local musicians who are masters of the contra genre and great teachers, and the price is FREE!!!   These are stand-alone sessions, but the hope is to build a repertoire of tunes to be played at the 5th Saturday open band dances, and a common community contra repertoire in general.  (Note that participants of these sessions are not expected to play for open bands, and participation in open bands does NOT require that you attend these sessions.) Instruments that show up include fiddle, mandolin, banjo, concertina, cello, guitar and sometimes even a bass playing melody. The sessions are held in SW and SE from 7pm to 9pm. We usually have about a dozen people with room for more! If you have questions, or to get on the reminder list, please email sharonjeanallen(at)yahoo.com.

The sessions for 2023-2024 are going to rotate:    ||: George|Betsy|Group Jam :||    repeating quarterly!!  At the Jams we will practice playing the tunes we have just learned, plus play other commonly played tunes.  The tunes at these by-ear jams will be played at a moderate tempo, and played enough times for you to learn tunes on the fly.  Folks who have not come to any of the tune teaching sessions are WELCOME at these community jams.  The sessions are stand alone, so don't worry if you haven't  been coming!
