Here are some of the more common questions we receive from parents of players. If the information on this site doesn't answer your questions, please email us at pccjnrcricket@gmail.com.
My child is unsure whether they want to play cricket or not. Can we try it out first? Absolutely, just let us know and we can tell you when practices and games are on so you can meet our friendly coaches and get a feel for what it's like.
Do I need to provide my own gear? We have team gear which you are welcome to use for starters, but you do need your own abdominal guard (box). Generally players end up buying their own gear over time, as they like to have their own pads and helmet that fit, but there's no need to spend up large before trying it out.
Are there practices? Yes, once a week in term time and they typically go for an hour. The location and timing vary by team but we'll let you know where and when once we know the age of your child.
How long is the season? Horowhenua Kapiti Cricket Association (HKCA) set the season dates, but as a general rule the season aligns with Term 1 and Term 4.
How will we know about cancellations? Cancellation calls are made by our group of coaches by 2pm on practice days, by 7.30am on Saturdays and by 3pm for weekday games. You'll hear about this through the Whatsapp chats that are our formal communication channels.
How can I help? Thanks for asking! The club is entirely run by volunteer parents - there are no pros here. What is really helpful is for parents to simply ask the coach (or manager) this exact question once the season is underway. One of the key tasks is scoring and it's always useful to have multiple scorers in a team so one person doesn't get lumped with it every week. Umpiring, setting up the field and making sure the right kids are padded up is also useful.
I heard there's also Sunday games. What's that about? HKCA run a development programme for juniors (Y6 and up), which includes a winter programme and Sunday games representing the Horowhenua Kapiti region and a tournament in Hawke's Bay in January each year. Players are not selected, but it is expected that players are very passionate about their cricket and focussed on improving. Check out the HKCA website for more info here: HKCA Development and Pathway Handbook — horowhenua-kāpiti.
What events does the club hold? Each year we have a Club Day before the season kicks off (typically in October) and there's a prizegiving to wrap things up (shortly after the last game).
Where is there information on the draw? Your coach will let you know, but we encourage you to download the Cricket Central app, which has a heap of great info such as draws, live and historic scores and player stats. This is also the app used for scoring in T24.
