A Digital Technology User Guide (TUG) on PBR Cowpea Production
The Pod Borer-Resistant Cowpea (PBR Cowpea) was developed to provide inbuilt resistance to the legume pod borer which is popularly called maruca. The currently available PBR cowpea variety in Nigeria is called SAMPEA 20-T.Â
It was developed by a number of scientists under the coordination of the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF).
PBR cowpea is beneficial to farmers because it is resistant to the legume pod borer (Maruca vitrata) which is a notable insect that negatively affects cowpea productivity. This helps farmers to reduce crop loss and achieve good yield on the cowpea farms.
The reduction of insecticide spraying to just two in a cropping season helps the farmers to reduce their cost of production and also minimize their exposure to chemicals being sprayed. This also helps to improve their health outcomes.
Also, early maturity of PBR cowpea helps farmers to mitigate the impact of climate change and overcome the challenge of early cessation of rainfall.
Moreover, the resistance of PBR cowpea to parasitic weeds such as striga and alectra helps farmers to achieve optimum crop productivity in their cowpea farms.
All the above benefits mean that farmers can make good money from their cowpea production and improve their livelihoods."
The PBR Cowpea App is available for free download on Google Play Store.
