English department/Annie Gabriel Library hymnology collection internship description:
As part of the project initiated by the English department at California Baptist University and Annie Gabriel Library to digitize the P. Boyd Smith Hymnology Collection, we seek organized and meticulous student interns from the undergraduate and graduate English department programs who are interested in reading, studying, and scanning delicate hymnbooks published in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Interns will work with in a database, highlighting research on almost 1,000 volumes of hymnbooks on the P. Boyd Smith Hymnology Collection. Interns will read and research selected titles. Interns will also learn to use the Bookeye 5 V3 scanner, located in the Annie Gabriel Library, digitizing books into .txt, .pdf, and .tiff files.
Qualified undergraduate and graduate English students are welcome to apply for the position and enroll in the ENG 491/591 course.
Job requirements/information:
Interns are required to work 6-10 hours per week; schedule TBA.
Interns will be required to meet with Elizabeth Brandt Flater, Rachel Murrell, and Dr. Berniece Alspach for training on topics related to digitization project.
Interns will navigate and study the project’s database, using established research protocols.
Interns will read and study selected titles in the collection, using the digitized scans collected in the project’s database.
Interns will scan and digitize selected hymn books using the Bookeye 5 V3 scanner
Interns will create bibliographic records for each hymn, including metadata such as: title, author, language, publication year, composer/lyricist/poet’s country of origin, time measure, metrical index (common meter, long meter, etc.), etc.
Interns will organize collected data according to theme, narrative voice and tone, figurative images, biblical references, rhyme scheme, linguistic trend, etc.
Interns will maintain selected database of files.
Interns will maintain the project’s social media presence.
Interested candidates should send (1) a cover letter, indicating why they believe they are a good candidate for the position and (2) a resume with appropriate references, particularly one faculty member from the English department. Applicants with a personal computer is recommended but not required.
