PBL Science Connection

Multiple Literacies in Project-Based Learning in Science (ML-PBL)

PBL Science Connection assists schools in adopting and implementing the Multiple Literacies in Project-Based Learning (ML-PBL) curriculum through professional learning sessions and teacher coaching. We have a flexible approach, adapting programming to meet schools' needs. We offer a supportive and responsive approach to working with teachers as they implement NGSS-aligned, student-centered, equitable PBL instruction in their classrooms.

Multiple Literacies in Project-Based Learning Curriculum (ML-PBL)

ML-PBL is a curriculum that has been designed, implemented, evaluated, and iterated over the last six years through a collaboration between CREATE for STEM at Michigan State University and Lucas Education Research by Joe Krajcik, Annemarie Palincsar and Emily Miller. Supported by extensive research, this project-based learning curriculum is aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and the Common Core State Standards for ELA and Math and includes supports for social and emotional learning and equitable classroom practice. The curriculum system includes student-facing materials, teacher-facing materials, student assessments, and a comprehensive professional learning program.

Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning is organized around four central components.

  • A driving question that motivates student interest in a real-world problem or phenomenon

  • An extended series of connected learning experiences that build towards answering the driving question, which supports the deeper learning outlined in the NGSS

  • Student collaboration to make sense of experiences that lead to answering the driving question.

  • A final physical artifact that connects students' scientific understandings to their own community context.

What we offer

Building from our expertise with the ML-PBL curriculum, we offer professional learning programs that are tailored to meet the needs of your district, school, and teachers. We can support projects of different scopes -- from pilot programs to full implementation of the curriculum -- at a pace that works for you. We facilitate professional learning sessions, offer one-on-one and small group coaching, and support the development and use of reflection tools. We look forward to learning about your context and exploring how we can support your implementation of PBL.
