The "California Communities" one is for 4th grades, covering California History and Science, mostly. The whole project is about how to build a community, how communities change over time, how minorities become majorities and how the values of that community changes as well. This is a BRAND new project, so it not anywhere near done so I need people like you to give me some links to resources and things like that. I plan to start teaching this for the 2022-2023 school year.... so more to come soon!
The "Human Rights" one is for 5th grade, covering American History and Science, mostly. The whole project is about gaining and losing rights, from the American Colonies, to the Bill of Rights, to the Civil War, the Oklahoma Land Rush, the rush of immigrants through Ellis Island and Angel Island.... The Science part covers conservation and water rights. This is my first year doing this project so any feedback is welcome and, you know me, more tweaks and feedbacks as the years tick on.
Also, as we need to learn the states and capitals, we have students write to the profressional sports teams of different states. We write friendly letters to the sports teams (NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, FIFA for cities) and tell them how much we love their team to see who in the class would get great swag! We mark on the class map which states send the most stuff and we end up with great stuff in the prize box! We learn about letters, stamps, envelopes and all that things that always get skipped in our modern world.
