Participation call
We look forward to meeting you if you engage with participatory and engagement-driven approaches in ethically complex settings, through research, activism, or practice.
Applicants must submit a one-page zine-style collage reflecting on a theme relevant to their work. This can be drawn, written, digital, hand-crafted, or any combination. A short video and resources on zine-making are available below. Submissions are intended as starting points for conversation and connection throughout the workshop rather than as finished pieces. Participants will also provide their name, photo, and contact information to be featured in the final zine (printed version, not online), to facilitate further collaboration.
We are open to contributions on diverse themes including, but not limited to:
Personal Involvement in Research: How do researchers’ identities, emotions, and experiences shape participatory work? For example, how does experiencing the same war as participants affect the researchers and their work? How does having shared or differing identity dimensions affect research?
Ethical Risks & Responsibilities: How can researchers engage with communities without putting themselves at risk? For example, how should one work with women facing domestic violence in ways that do not further expose them to harm or retaliation? How do researchers, ensure their own safety (physically, emotionally, and psychologically) when working in high-risk contexts?
Adapting & Appropriating Methods: How can participation-based approaches be adapted to different contexts while ensuring safety, agency, and fit for diverse communities (e.g., using playful, non-verbal methods with children)
Giving Back & Design Justice: How do can researchers ensure that communities benefit from research rather than being extracted from? For example, when researchers use the stories and experiences of abuse survivors, how can they give credit to participants and ensure they also benefit from their participation?
