History
Texas founded originally as a sugar plantation this city is home to the headquarters of Imperial sugar the company's main refinery and distributions that are used to operate in sugar land but were shut down in 2003 the buildings however are still standing and served as a reminder of the city's history located 25 miles southwest Houston.
Historically, Sugar Land Texas was an agricultural city. In 1823, Stephen F. Austin was given the charter to settle 300 American families in Texas. As stated above, Sugar Cane, was their most popular form of production in agriculture. The growing of sugar cane ended in 1928. Sugar Land has both been spelled Sugar Land, and Sugarland. Other crops grown and harvest here cotton and corn, but its most popular for sugar.
SHERIFFS WALTER BURTON AND HENRY FERGUSON were prominent men in the face of High levels of racism during the decade of 1880 - 1890. Holding positions as sheriff and Senators, helping to start Prairie View University. In 1907, Kempner and Eldridge chartered the narrow-gauge Imperial Valley Railway, which traveled seven miles west of Sugar Land, later incorporating it with the Sugar Land Railway.
The 1920s was Sugar Land’s first golden age. Business was good, the refinery expanded, and about 2,000 people lived in relative comfort with good amenities. During the 1950s and 1960s Sugar Land remained segregated, even though they prospered and did well in the city. African-American children had to attend all-African-American schools, and eating establishments either refused to serve minority persons or required them to sit in separate dining rooms. Sugar Land became a city in 1959, by Imperial Sugar selling homes to property owners in fear that Houston would annex Sugar Land into their city.
