Paulo Furquim de Azevedo


Paulo Furquim is Full Professor at Insper, where he serves as director of the Center for Regulation and Democracy, and coordinator of the Chair Familia Martinez-Goldberg. Paulo was a member of the Brazilian competition authority (Cade), from 2006 to 2009, and acting chairman in 2008. He was also a Visiting Professor at MIT in 2012 and Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley in 1994.  Paulo coordinated several research projects with grants from Fapesp, the Inter-American Development Bank, Center for Economic and Social Law Studies (CEDES), and the National Council of Justice (CNJ). He is the author of a number of papers and book chapters on the following topics: competition policy, empirical legal studies, regulation, and market and firm organization. He is frequently called upon to give opinions on administrative procedures or arbitration disputes involving mergers and acquisitions, strategies and corporate agreements. He has been referenced by the Global Competition Review – Who is Who, for several years, as ‘Most Highly Regarded Competition Economist’ in Brazil. Paulo holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and a Ph.D. in Economics at the University of São Paulo (USP).
