Paul Klee Unit

DAY 1 - Art History

Paul Klee Unit

Read the artist biography to the left by clicking on the link below the sheet. Then watch the video below. Once you are more familiar with the artist you will work on a couple of projects!

Monument in Fertile Country

To the left is a line art version of Paul Klee’s painting, “Monument in Fertile Country”. Go online and find a color version of this painting and you will see how important color is to Klee's work!

Use a ruler to create your own version of this line drawing. (It doesn’t need to be exact!) Fill in the shapes with a monochromatic color scheme, (different shades/tints of the same color).

OPTIONAL: Print and color, or color digitally.

Student Digital Example: Created on Autodesk SketchBook on Chromebook.

DAY 2 - Art Creation

Your choice of medium.

Early Chill

Paul Klee loved color! This painting is full of letters and words, but it is the color that is communicating, not the words and letters.

You are going to choose a quote that you like to create a similar piece of art. Use a ruler to draw lines horizontally as shown to the right, then fill each line with letters/ words from your quote. Start with pencil, then go over with permanent marker. Color in the shapes between letters using a color scheme of your choice. (Don’t worry if you can’t read your quote, it will become an abstract piece of art.)

Your final sheet should be filled with letters from top to bottom, side to side. Letters should be in all caps and touch the top and bottom of each line. You can repeat words as needed, and continue on the next line in the middle of a word.

You can draw on your own paper and color, or create and color digitally on an iPad or Touch Screen Chromebook.

DAY 3 - Art Analysis

Very Important: Please be sure to make a copy when prompted so that you aren't working on the main file!

DAY 4 & 5 - Art Creation

Draw your Dreams

Materials: Paper, Sharpies and Chalk or Colored Pencil.

Very Important: Please be sure to make a copy when prompted so that you aren't working on the main file!

Dream Art

Leave a pencil and paper by your bedside and the next time you wake from a dream, write out some of the narrative and draw some of the imagery from your dream. Use symbols rather than realistic drawings! Using those notes as a guide fill in the Dream Planning Sheet to the left and then create a piece of art using that as your inspiration.

PROJECT:

Using your Dream Art Planning Sheet create a piece of art using your dream as inspiration. Use Pencils, Sharpies and Chalk. Or if you don't have chalk use colored pencils! You can print and use this sheet, use your own paper or create digitally if your teacher has allowed that.

You can draw on your own paper and color, or create and color digitally on an iPad or Touch Screen Chromebook.
