Supplies: seed (bean, pumpkin, corn, pea or any large seed)/lego or wadded up piece of paper, tape, glue, scissors
Optional supplies: feathers, scissors, rubber bands, toothpicks, balloons, bags, cork, tacks, metal springs, wire, aluminum foil,
string or yarn,....
Steps:
Think about the following questions: What does a new plant grow from? (seed) Where do the seeds come from? (Plants grow seeds to reproduce more of the same kind of plant) How does a seed get to a certain place? Where did the weed seeds in the garden come from? Have you ever seen seeds flying in the air? (dandelion fluff) Being carried by a dog? (burrs, foxtail) Have you heard of seeds floating on water to a new spot to grow? (coconuts). All these seeds have features that help them travel in a special way. A seed has one purpose: to become a new plant. Can you design seeds to travel in different ways?
You will adapt a seed to (if you do not have a seed, then use a pebble, small Lego, small rolled up piece of paper or anything that can pass as a seed)
float on water for at least 5 minutes
one seed to be thrown at least 2 feet from the parent plant
fly at least 3 feet
attach to an animal or person for 20 feet .
When you have completed adapting your seeds, demonstrate to someone how they work.
Now consider why seeds have dispersal mechanisms and what might happen if all seeds fell straight to the ground and grew right under the parent plant.
