Pattengill PTA Meeting Minutes
Call To Order: Tuesday 1/10/2023 @ 7:03PM
Attendance: Approximately 13
*Due to conflicting schedules, our meeting was pushed around a bit from the agenda
Nomination Committee: Danielle Moody
We will be looking to replace the following positions for our 2023-2024 school year, for two learn term limits. President, Co-Vice President (Fall), Secretary and Treasurer. It is asked that each person interested in being apart of the executive board write a paragraph explaining why they’d like to be in that position. This can be a few sentences or more. An introduction of yourself to the school and families. Voting will take place at our April 4th meeting. Nominations are to be stated to Danielle Moody or the board by our March 7th meeting. Candidates will be introduced to the community as options on March 7th. Intro paragraphs with photos will be posted on social media to spread the word. If you’d like to vote in that election, you MUST be a member. If you are unsure if you are a member, please reach out to a board member. Voting will be in person, with a possibility of a virtual option (we will look into this being a legal voting method). Voting will be done on a ballot (google doc).
Urgent: We are in need of 3-4 additional nomination committee chair positions. These people will work closely with Danielle with making recommendations and appropriately watching the nomination process closely. Please reach out to Danielle Moody or a board position to help with this job. This is a position you can do remotely, if you unable to attend meetings. These people will need to voting in by our February 7th meeting.
President’s Report: Amy Phillips
Membership: Our membership is very low. If you think you’re a member and/or have doubt, please double check with a member of the board to confirm. Membership comes with voting privileges, therefore non members cannot vote in our upcoming executive board voting process. Membership is $10/person, $20/family. Join on our memberhub link.
Upcoming events: 1/17- PJ Day $1 suggested donation, can be paid on memberhub. We acknowledge that this is a Tuesday. It was requested by a previous student representative that Mondays or returns from break be PJ days.
12/19- We will be partnering with Angell and Rogers to meet at Beaumont Royal Oak @7:45pm. Dress warm, bring glow/lights (a small special light up gift will be given), and help support our community. We will meet near the circle drive near the East entrance.
Important Notice: We officially gave notice of our required 30-day notice for an intent to amend our current bylaws. It was brought to our attention there was a mistake in the bylaws regarding our current term limits. The limits state in the bylaws each position is a one year term, that is incorrect, as all executive board positions are two year terms. The amendment will reflect the term limit change and will be backdated to reflect the current school year. It will also be voted to continue the two-year terms or change it to one-year terms.
Approval for April 2022 PTA Meeting Minutes: Kizzy Gesinski
Motion for approval of December 2022 Meeting Minutes approved by: Amy Guenther & Jessica Malangone.
Treasurer Report: Lorene Branch
November and December reports presented. It was explained that the process for balancing the bank account vs QuickBooks was time-consuming but is now resolved. Note the “uncleared expenses” on the budget is the recent book fair and dine to donate submissions. Lorene is continuing to work on the classroom stipends of $500 and the yearly $90 checks. No approval necessary. It was asked about our balance and an email that was sent from the district before winter break. The email regarding updates and grant money sent from the district in December is not related to the monies supplied by the PTA. PTA and District funds are completely separate. We have broken down the cost on our budget sheet about where PTA funds are directed. District funding questions should always be referred back to the principal or the administration office.
Principal’s Report: Mrs. Shamika Womble

Motion for approval of November 2022 Meeting Minutes approved by: Amy Guenther & Gabrielle Makowski-King
Treasurer Report: Lorene Branch, Not in attendance
November statement not available in time of this meeting. October financial report was sent to the PTA board and will be posted. November statement has a data entry error that Lorene is working hard to figure out. It’s a minor error that she’s confident will be ironed out, but is time consuming. As of 12/6, Caring and Sharing PJ day/Hat day has brought in $205. Our current account is $43,381.89. She is working on the $90 classroom contributions checks that we give out yearly and finishing up the additional $500 classroom contributions.

Thanksgiving reading challenges was a big success. There will be monthly reading challenges for students. Thailand/Pattengill pen pal program is involving our 4th and 5th grade students. Ask your students about their letters, they are very excited about them. The Pattengill Dad’s club is supporting this program with an end of the year gift exchange. 5th grade camp will be march 6-8 at YMCA Camp Storer in Jackson, Mi. Camp will be $185 for all students across the district. This is new this year, making a universal fee. There is an informal zoom meeting 12/12 @6pm. If you child is absent or late you must report absences to 248-873-8700. Use the QR code at the front entrance to sign your child in late. If you child arrives after 8:05am, they are considered late. There is a new fence going in around the grounds of school sometimes around mid-winter break. This fence will be entirely enclosed and will need to be unlocked daily for access. Some questions were asked about after hours use of the playground due to the enclosure aspect, it appears that the answers to those questions are currently unknown. Stay tuned for more details. There are additional security cameras added to the school property, in total making 37 cameras at Pattengill for safety.

Thank you as always for the support. It was asked if field trip busing only for grade level teachers? As some special teachers would like to know if there is financial support available for field trip or an assembly option for them as well. If was explained that money set aside for buses was specifically for grade level trips, but that funds would be available for special teachers if the need is there. The PTA board would figure out funding for said event.
Committee Updates:
Dine To Donate: Nicole Heger not in attendance. Ashlee Kenworthy reporting. DTD for Panera brought in $69.50. December DTD is Ray’s Ice Cream on 12/28. January DTD will be on the 17th @ Amici’s. Details to follow.
Student Directory: Angela Williamson- not in attendance- Kizzy Gesinski reporting. It appears there was a glitch in the input process at the beginning of the year, and Tk and K was missing from the directory. In addition, student grade/teacher was inaccurate also. Angela put in an order with tech support in addition to reaching out to office staff to correct the problem. As if 12/12 the problem should be corrected and all students should be inputted and updated. Please reach out the Angela Williamson with any concerns and/or if your child is not in the directory. Please note, when logging in to the directly, you will only gain access by using the email that is linked to your child’s account. Whatever email the school has on file for you (the parent), that is your log in email.
Spirit Wear: Angie Lovell- not in attendance- website active along with having pins, stickers and keychains available for sale. Sales often posted on social media.
Book Fair- Gabrielle Makowski-King, December 5th-7th, Set up went well, good turn out for volunteers. Excited to have the program back!
Dad’s Club- Not in attendance.
Caring & Sharing- Amy Phillips, website was extended until 12/10. It was appearing like we were under the projected amount to bring in, but we did have less families to provide for. There was still monetary donations at each school from the spirit wear days to be picked up.
Student and Staff Appreciation- Amy Phillips. Just before Thanksgiving, we gave out pie, turkey, 3 dinner kits, some coco bombs, and fun hats as our holiday student and staff appreciation. When we give these gifts, we use a spreadsheet with every student listed. Each student is listed next to a number on the spread sheet (That we obtain through the office). We use a “randomizer” app on our phone and input all the numbers. We are conscious to try and choose 1 student in each class/grade (if applicable), and we keep track to no duplicate gift giving. We cannot guarantee every student to get something each time, but we have in the past given to every student on certain days (Last year: Valentines, lemonade). We try and keep this random gift giving as fair as possible.

Thank you as always for the support, advocacy, snacks and aesthetics of the lounge. The Staff and children loved the Fun Run and Trunk or Treat. Staff is asking when they’ll be gifted the $90 checks that are typically given out. As a PTA we gift each teacher a $100 stipend, minus their PTA membership fee of $10. It was explained that the checks were delayed due to money clearances and Fun Run money coming in. Checks will be administered in the coming weeks. Staff would like to promote literacy at home. It was asked that PTA support that, details to come. It was also discussed how posts are made on social media. PTA has various social media accounts. In our Facebook group, anyone can post, but the post does need to be approved by an admin of the page. Occasionally a post may be denied, in that case you will receive a message explaining. Typically, it is denied due to the answer already being post, in which case the poster will be tagged in the original post. PTA encourages families and staff to post on social media. Posts that need to be shared on Instagram or our website, please email Amy Phillips.

Proposed summer spending of our current account balance/fun run money. We currently have $43,050 total, but we have a standing budget of monies allotted for yearly expenses. We have about $28,000 to spend. It is proposed as such: Up to $5,000 on Inside Items (such as flex seating), Up to $8,000 on Outside Items (Such as picnic tables and benches), Up to $8,000 on classroom contributions (16 Classes), Up to $4,000 on Specials contributions (4 classrooms). Some items mentioned as being expenses flex seating, dry erase tables, stools, bean bag chairs, tray for OT room, seating with tables for certain areas in communal spaces, bench replacement on playground, picnic tables and benches that turn into tables for outdoor classrooms.
Note: Balance can be used at the discretion of the board with a majority vote on things such as but not limited to outdoor classroom, murals, and items for support staff.
It is suggested that Mrs. Tai Kimmerly apply for the Virtual class budget line item, and suggested that Mrs. Allison Carr apply for the classroom grant line item.
Motion to vote for proposed budget: Robert Isley and Karen Huyghe. All in favor with 3 votes via zoom meeting and 5 in person votes, with a total of 8 active PTA member votes. Proposed budget approved.
Note issues were brought up regarding budgeting/beautification and lawn/ground issues. It was questioned whether or not those issues were line-item budgeted resources. It is confirmed not to be a PTA expense. We will be reaching out to the appropriate resources to try and get some issues fixed. Unfortunately, because the fencing, playground, cement and lawn maintenance issues are not that of the PTA, we do not have appropriate answers currently. However, we are trying to find the appropriate people in charge.

“Thank You” for stocking the teacher’s lounge. It’s always very appreciated. It was asked why Pattengill PTA chooses to celebrate Staff Appreciation Week in March opposed to National Teacher’s Week in May. In response, the SAW Chair positions and President Amy, explained that due to scheduling of multiple events and all that goes in to making Ice Cream social happen, it was switched, many years before our current board was present. However, we celebrate “Staff” appreciation, opposed to just “teacher’s”. We ask a lot of our families to host Ice Cream Social, which falls on the week after Teacher’s Appreciation week. We ask of volunteer hours, in addition to financial contributions for Ice Cream Social Baskets. In order to help make Staff Appreciation Week successful, we also ask for a lot of volunteer/donations that week as well. If we celebrated SAW during national teacher’s week, it would be asking a lot of our community. It was agreed that next year we’d try and coordinate a smaller event to recognize national teacher appreciation week, however we will still continue to celebrate Staff Appreciation in March at Pattengill. Note- this could change, but currently is set as this schedule.
Tai Kimmerly- Talent show update. The PTA has set a budget of $150. Event will take place on Friday June 10th @ 1:45-3:15pm. Please bring lawn chairs or picnic blanket and meet outside the media center area if you’d like to watch this lovely performance. Everyone is welcomed! Each talent gets 3 minutes. Gabrielle Makowski-Kind offered to help Tai with some items, if additional help is needed, the PTA will reach out to the community.

Principal’s Report/ Teacher’s Report: Mrs. Womble,
Night Lock Security Systems have been installed on every doorway at Pattengill, as well as all Berkley Schools. This door locking security systems have been named as one of the best life saving measures in a school setting. They have been praised with saving many lives during the Oxford tragedy. The device is installed on the back of the door, with an adjacent attachment on the floor. When this lock is implemented, the staff member will take the lock that is securely placed in a safety box nearby on the wall and place the locking joint from the door into the floor. This makes the door virtually unable to be opened. We’d like to give a special “Thank you” to Karsyn Baker’s father, who installed all these security systems in every room of the Berkley School District. We are pleased to have this now be apart of our security system.
In addition, our classrooms now have “Go Buckets”, which are portable lavatories that can be used in the case of our school being in a lock down situation. ER Call buttons have been serviced and work perfectly. And our school will have 2 emergency kit bags that can be used in urgent situations to stop excessive bleeding or other urgent needs before the emergency services arrive. Our school also recently had an ALICE refresher training.
5th grade camp- We have confirmed 34 students attending with about 6 students currently unconfirmed. Mrs. Womble will be getting final numbers to us ASAP to figure out what our financial contribution will be for 5th grade camp.
Kindergarten Round Up- May 11th, with an incoming 42 kindergarten students and 14 TK students. The PTA will be in attendance at this event to supply incoming children with readiness bags.
Thank You for family involvement at Family Reading Night and for PTA contribution. The event was a huge success! Thank you for Staff Appreciation Week.
Importance Dates:
4/15- No school
4/21- 1st Grade concert
4/22- Spring Fling Dance, hosted by the Pattengill Dad’s Club
Teacher’s Report: Karsyn Baker
Thank you so very much for Staff Appreciation Week. It was by far the best they’ve had. They all felt special individually and really appreciation the love.
Family Reading Night- Thank you so much for the contribution. Stickers were placed inside each book that indicated they were donated by the Pattengill PTA. 2 books were placed in each classroom.
Field Trip Bus budgeting- There have been recent questions regarding if PTA still planned to help supply buses for field trips. It was explained that we previously added money, pre pandemic, to the busing fund that has not been used. We still have it in our budget as well. PTA shared with Karsyn that money has been set aside.
Room Parent Meet Ups- It was strongly encouraged at our March meeting that the teachers desired for room parents to coordinate out of school meet ups to help children get acquainted with their peers. Teacher’s wanted to acknowledge that it appears those meet ups have started to take place and wanted to say “thank you”.
Committee Updates:
Dine To Donate: Nicole Heger
Jimmy John’s March Dine to Donate event appeared to be success, we have not heard final numbers yet. But they were gracious enough to donate 25% of daily sales to our school!
4/14- Crispelli’s for 20% when mentioning you are with Pattengill.
Ice Cream Social: Nicole Heger & Kristin Church
New look, We’ll be doing an Ice Cream Truck this year! There will be at least 10 options (it was suggested that additional ice cream be on standby as in the past when this option was used the truck ran out of ice cream). Pizza will also be on the menu. Nicole and Kristin are searching around to find pizza for a decent price, as our previous retailer is no longer in business. There will be an obstacle course, DJ Nitro, Balloon animals (Thank you Mrs. Kimmerly), Dad’s Club Games and great prizes! Maybe a dunk tank! Keep an eye out for a sign-up genius to help volunteer this event! We will need a lot of volunteers to make this event happen! Save the date: May 19th @ 5pm
ICS Raffle Basket: Angela Williamson
A Sign-up genius will be sent out soon for themes for the Ice Cream Social Raffle Baskets. This will be the job of the Room Parents to coordinate this basket amongst your classroom. We ask that you reach out to the families in your class to donate items coordinating with which theme your class chooses. Baskets will be asked to be returned fully assembled on May 11th, one week before our Ice Cream Social event. Photos of the basket will them be placed on social media. Tickets for the Ice Cream Social will be available for purchasing the morning of May 19th, being sold all day online at Memberhub or at Drop off and Pick up and again at the actual event.
Beautification: Robert Isley
We will postpone the survey until a later date, as we await what the district plans to do to the property. We will plan to have an Earth Day Clean Up on 4/24 with a rain delay date of 4/30. Please come out and help make our school spring ready!
Dad’s Club- John Gesinski
Dad’s club would like to plan a ground clean up before the Spring Fling dance, details will be posted on social media. The dance is on 4/22, which would be before the PTA scheduled clean up. In addition, dad’s club is asking that power washing be done to the grounds.
They’re asking our support in helping with credit card sales for the Spring Fling dance. Also note, memberhub is an option for credit card sales for the event as well.
It was asked that PTA help pay for a new bike rack. There seems to be some confusion on whether a previous insurance claim replaced an existing bike rack or not. Mrs. Womble and Dad’s Club are looking into this.
Student Directory: Angela Williamson
All information has been uploaded to the app. Angela needs Fun Run Sponsor logos (Amy to provide). There will be a privacy setting on each child’s account so parents can set how much information is shared amongst peers. Multiple households for one child is available. This should be live shortly.
Founder’s Day: Kizzy Gesinski
Founder’s day was successful. We gifted each of our winner’s a Crispelli’s gift card in the amount of $60 with a bouquet of flowers. In addition to their original announcement gift. Overall coming in underbudget for this year. Next year will be in person.
Staff Appreciation Week: Amy Phillips & Kizzy Gesinski
Staff Appreciation Week was extremely rewarding. Many, Many hours were put in to making the event successful. The staff loved their gifts, and the daily treats. A special thank you to all the families who helped make the event great! In addition, thank you to local organizations, such as Trader Joe’s for donations and Woodward Corner’s who gifted $10 gift cards to every staff member! Each staff member was given a camping inspired gift to coordinate with our theme. Daily we set out meals and dessert.
Board Nomination Committee: Danielle Moody
Danielle asked if anyone else would like to be nominated for the Spring Co- Vice President position. Ashlee Kenworthy is our only nominee. Ashlee unfortunately was unable to attend the meeting, as she was home under the weather.
Voting for Spring Co-Vice President Ashlee Kenworthy to start her two year term, but not limited to, starting 2022-2023 school year. All attendees were in favor, none opposed.
Congratulations Ashlee Kenworthy!! Welcome to the Pattengill PTA Board!

Many ideas were brought up and we are trying to make those come to light. Stay tuned! In addition, Molly Borgon submitted a list of want/needs from a staff perspective that will also be taken into consideration.
Parent’s Night Out- We do not have a June meeting scheduled, and would like to plan a Parent’s Night Out. Dates will be released shortly on the PTA Facebook page. Stay tuned!
