By the end of 1980, Fusion and Moby Dick Records had become San Francisco’s first gay-owned, gay-run dance music labels, producing worldwide hits rivaling anything corporate record labels could offer.
Menergy was released for first time by Fusion Records in 1982. Fusion was a record label created in 1980 by Steven Ames Brown in San Francisco, CA, (The Fusion Productions of San Francisco Ltd.) and close down in 1982.
It was located at The Women’s Bldg. N°3 3543 18Th Street, San Francisco , CA, 94110.
About Menergy, Marty Blecman remind: “We got high and I added an ‘M’ in front of title track called ‘Energy,’ and we came up with all these completely gay lyrics for it. In the end, that's what we used.”
Patrick Cowley and Marty Blecman (31 and 27 years old by then) co-formed Megatone Records, an independent music label oriented to disco and HiNRG in San Francisco in 1981. The label name was derived “Megatron Man”. In 1983, Sylvester became a success of Megatone Records. Some of the artists involved include: Jeanie Tracy, Sylvester, Modern Rocketry, Sarah Dash, Patti LaBelle, and Paul Parker.
Patrick Cowley and Marty Blecman solidified their places at the center of the San Francisco sound, releasing hit after hit, relaunching Sylvester’s career, and discovering a true star in singer Paul Parker.
After Patrick's death in 1982, Blecman was head of the label until he died of AIDS in 1991. In 1992, John Hedges (passed in 06-26-2022) and Terrence Brown took over Megatone. In 1995, Megatone closed down & its back catalog was sold to Unidisc Music.
Unidisc is a canadian independent disco and dance music record label, founded in 1977 by Montreal DJ George Cucuzzella.
The name of the company owning the label has changed several times over the years (the years below are estimates):
Unidisc Records Ltd. – up to 1986.
Unidisc Productions Ltd. – 1986 to 1988/9.
Unidisc Productions (Int'l) Ltd. – 1988/9 to 1993/4.
Unidisc Music Inc. – 1993/4 onwards.
Unidisc label is known for releasing rare music, that was made between the mid-1960s and late 1980s. Genres include rock, electronic, funk, soul, hip hop, jazz, reggae, Latin, disco and a cappella. Unidisc owns catalogs of other independent New York labels that the latter distributed. Also has acquired recording and publishing rights for many other dance music catalogs.
In 2007 Honey Soundsystem was contacted by the former owner of Megatone Records John Hedges who was moving to Palm Springs and invited Honey Soundsystem owners over to his basement to collect over 2,000 records from his collection. Among the archives they noticed there were unreleased Patrick's material remained buried in the Megatone vaults. Most of them were underground electronic sounds. In 2015 they released that stuff.
There were three moldy boxes of quarter inch reel to reel tapes. Included was the final mixed down reel for “Kickin’ In”, an epic 12-minute journey through disco, that Patrick recorded with Loverde in 1978. From the two minute plus drum solo that builds up to the introduction of a bouncing arpeggiated Prophet IV and the harmonized vocals, all transport the listener to another realm.
The song encapsulates the Hi-NRG dance music that Patrick became known for. It was an “up” sound for the gay disco scene, music that would compliment and sometimes enhance all night dancing. On the flip are two earlier songs produced between 1975-77 featuring basslines by college classmate and studio mate Maurice Tani.
Both songs feature Patrick narrating erotic gay sex fantasies inspired by San Francisco’s leather bars, back rooms and bathhouses. These songs show the sleazy side of Cowley’s slow burning, oozing electronic creations with layers and layers of synthesizer, guitar, drum machine and vocoder.
All songs have been mastered by George Horn, who originally mastered all of the Megatone Records releases at Fantasy Studios. Each 12” comes housed in their custom Honey Soundsystem die-cut jacket featuring an illustration of the San Francisco skyline. Also included is a 8 inch square postcard of the original “Kickin’ In” reel to reel box with Patrick’s handwriting on the front and lyrics on the back.
“Patrick parted the veil and entered a dark world of forbidden vices, wondrous musical panoramas and bold, strident, hopeful possibilities. Patrick brought the future to us and laid it at our feet.” – David Diebold ’Tribal Rites’
In 2009 Macro Records from Germany released the álbum ‘Catholic’ with unknown songs from Patrick Cowley and Jorge Socarras of mid ‘70s.
Macro was founded in 2007. Macro began as the main outlet for Stefan Goldmann's productions and gradually expanded its artist roster. In addition to new material the label also releases a series, unofficially named "Prototypes", showcasing outstanding works from past decades coupled with new remixes. Operated by Stefan Goldmann and Finn Johannsen out of Berlin, designed by Viet Hoa Le and mastered by Rashad Becker. Worldwide distribution by Wordandsound.
Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records have teamed up again to release another volume of gay porn soundtracks.
In 1979 Patrick was contacted by John Coletti, owner of famed gay pornc ompany Fox Studio in Los Angeles. Patrick jumped on this offer and sent reels of his college compositions from the 70s to John in LA. Coletti then used a variable speed oscillator to adjust the pitch and speed of Patrick’s songs in-sync with the film scene. “Muscle Up” is a collection of Cowley’s instrumental songs recorded between 1973 and 1980 found in the Fox Studio vaults. This compilation also includes bonus compositions found in the basement of Megatone Records owner John Hedges and the attic of former bandmate Maurice Tani.
Featuring 75 minutes of music, this compilation contains soundtrack music from two Fox Studio films, “Muscle Up” and “School Daze”, plus additional songs from the same era, never before released on vinyl. The tapes were restored and transferred using the same speed and pitch settings, then remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Cover designed by Berlin-based artist Gwenael Rattke. For Patrick’s 65th birthday, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records present a glimpse into the futuristic world of a young genius.
