The Undefined Season
The Undefined Season
Personal Essay – Completed February 2026
Currently under simultaneous submission
Short Description:
The Undefined Season explores the emotional contrast between the structured world of elite athletics and the ambiguity of everyday life. While the Olympics compress years of discipline into a visible arc of preparation, performance, and result, many lives unfold without marked boundaries or formal culmination.
The essay reflects on the experience of living in “permanent preparation”- training for events that never quite arrive, sustaining readiness without a defined arena, and carrying effort that accumulates without external recognition. Drawing on the imagery of the Olympic Games, the piece examines what happens when performance becomes load-bearing, and what it means to inhabit a season with no closing ceremony.
