Captivity
Personal Essay – Completed February 2026
Currently under simultaneous submission
Short Description:
Captivity is a reflective personal essay about how climate, place, and the body intersect to create a quiet form of confinement. Moving between a present-day winter walk with a dog and childhood memories of arriving in Quebec, the piece traces how endurance is often mistaken for adaptation, and how environments that limit movement can reshape a person’s sense of freedom, safety, and time. The essay examines the slow erosion that occurs when life must be negotiated rather than lived, and how the body recognizes captivity long before the mind names it.
