My name is Patricia Hernandez, I was born in Gilroy, CA and currently teach in Oakland, CA. I am bilingual and speak English and Spanish fluently. I am proud of my LatinX background and I aspire to use my culture to relate to many children and families in the Bay Area. My parents immigrated from Mexico in 1977, and their highest level of education was Elementary School. I teach to strengthen my community while applying empathy for differences.

Before teaching grade school ages, I taught Preschool for 3 years at a small private school in San Francisco. Throughout my journey I have developed a strong understanding for child development, diversity, and social emotional learning.

I believe in understanding your students, not only by studying what kind of learner they are but by creating a welcoming place to learn.
I believe all students should feel represented in their classrooms. I do this by educating myself on a students background and building a home school connection. Creating lessons that are differentiated and inclusive for my students and their learning needs.
Creating a space for growth mindset is equally as important.

I was asked to teach Spanish to K-5 at Head Royce School, a few weeks into the 2020 academic school year. Taking on this new role created an amazing opportunity for my teaching growth and allowed me to create versatile lessons daily. I heavily focused on Hispanic Heritage month and created a Change Makers unit with grades 3-5. Aside from Change Makers the students got to experience growth in knowledge with Hispanic Culture.
