Meet the EcoMuseum of Zagori
Art Residency Program 2026
EcoMuseum Zagori is pleased to announce an open call for the Pathways of Art artist residency program. The program aims to revitalize abandoned trails through contemporary art, transforming them into vibrant cultural routes that connect the natural landscape with local cultural heritage.
Pathways of Art is an artist residency program focused on reactivating traditional trails, highlighting them as cultural, social and ecological landmarks. Through contemporary artistic practice, the trails are treated not only as movement routes but as carriers of memory, knowledge, and human–landscape relationships.
Pathways of Art aims to produce well-documented artistic work, with an emphasis on highlighting abandoned trails through contemporary art. Through site-specific artistic interventions, the trails are reactivated as living cultural routes that connect the natural landscape with cultural heritage.

An opportunity to live and work in Ano Pedina, Zagori, in direct contact with the natural environment and the local community. During the residency, participants are expected to develop artistic practices that respond to the landscape, history, and character of the region.
Artists can produce site-specific, ephemeral works in the landscape. The emphasis is on artworks that respect the environment, use natural and/or locally sourced materials, and embrace temporality, allowing the landscape to gradually return to its natural state.
The residency includes a structured program with workshops, talks, practice exchanges, and a final public presentation of the works.
The detailed program will be shared with selected artists at a later stage.

The selected trail is Ano Pedina – Elafotopos (3.6 km), a site closely linked to the history of transhumance, seasonal livestock movements and land management practices that have shaped both the biodiversity and the cultural landscape of Zagori, where human presence, nature, and movement coexist in dynamic balance.
Artists are invited to create works that respond to this historical and environmental context.
Artists are expected to produce ephemeral works using natural materials (e.g. stone, wood, soil, plant matter, etc.).
The artworks will be installed along the trail and documented through photography. The resulting photographic material may be used in a future photography exhibition and/or other presentation activities related to the project.
Artists are required to specify in their application the materials they intend to use, in order to confirm that they are natural and available along the trail. Any necessary tools must be brought by the artists themselves.
Biodegradable
The works should be ephemeral and biodegradable.
Non-harmful
The works should cause no damage to the environment.
Respectful
The works should respect the local flora and fauna.
Alongside the residency, EcoMuseum Zagori implements documentation and cultural heritage initiatives related to the Ano Pedina – Elafotopos trail, including recording oral histories, stories, and local memories.
This material will be accessible to visitors via QR codes along the trail, enriching the visitor experience with an additional narrative layer. Residents can draw inspiration from this content or conceptually engage with it.
During the residency, selected artists will be invited to facilitate a short participatory workshop in collaboration with the local community. Workshops can be artistic, experiential, or educational and should relate to the program’s theme, human–landscape relations, or the artist’s own practice.
The goal is to foster dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collective experience between artists and local residents, without requiring prior artistic experience from participants.
