KEY NOTE SPEAKERS FOR PAC 2021
Irene Bosch
Dr. Irene Bosch is an expert in dengue virus, and has traveled and collaborated extensively in the Americas to study dengue virus biology. Dr. Bosch's research interests focus on understanding the pathogenesis of human RNA viruses, specifically flavivirus dengue and West Nile virus. She graduated from Harvard University, where she focused her studies on molecular biology of parasites, after that she did post-doctoral training at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in Boston, where she worked on cancer research and on gene expression studies and differential display in cancer cells, and in conjunction with the Department of Human Retrovirology, studying chemokine responses to HIV.
Formerly a Research Scientist at MIT, she is an Adjunct Professor at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. She is a founder and the former CEO of E25Bio, where she currently is a Director.
Lee Gehrke
Lee Gehrke is the Hermann von Helmholtz Professor in the Institute for Medical Engineering and Science and Professor of Microbiology and Immunobiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gehrke received his PhD degree in anatomy and developmental genetics from the school of medicine at Case Western Reserve University and then did postdoctoral training in the Biology Department at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been a member of the MIT and Harvard faculties since 1982. At Harvard he directs the Human Functional Anatomy course for medical and graduate students and also teaches Virology to graduate students.
His laboratory studies viruses that use RNA as their genetic material (RNA viruses). He focuses on the group of viruses that includes dengue fever virus and West Nile virus. His particular interest is how human cells detect viruses that invade them (innate immune responses), and how the genetic information in RNA viruses is converted to protein (translational control of gene regulation). He also works with engineers to build rapid diagnostic devices to detect dangerous viruses in the field and is a founder of the company, E25Bio.
