Paseo Joint Committee: Sub-Committee Report on Wild Hogs
December 1, 2021
The reports of property damage as well as sightings of feral hogs continues to grow. The feral hogs represent both a health and safety issue, as well as causing damage to landscaped areas within the community and should be taken seriously.. Reports of their presence are now widespread and this issue should demand a sense of urgency to deal with it. With this in mind, the sub-committee submits the following points for consideration and action by the joint committee.
The use of professional trappers. This effort should be a coordinated one within the community as well with the Six Mile Cypress Slough operators. Well placed traps, both box and corral type, where activity is present, sufficient in number and location, may be effective in controlling the presence of the hogs and should be pursued aggressively and on a continuing basis.
Official discussions with the operators of the Six Mile Cypress Slough. The Slough is the primary habitat of the hogs, crossing CDD property onto private residential property. Reaching out to the Slough operators should be a proactive effort to express to the operators the extent of the problem and to coordinate their efforts with ours in attempting to control it. This discussion should be on an “official” basis with the representatives, whichever entity or individuals that may be from Paseo, acting with the capacity to speak with authority for the community.
Implement a reporting and documentation system. Such a system, implemented by each association would allow us to effectively track and monitor damage within each association and coordinate that information into a single source. More details on the process of creating such a system can be supplied to each association to ensure a uniform reporting system.
Create a community wide communication process. Such a process would provide for transparency in informing the community of efforts to deal with this issue and to provide accurate information for the benefit of residents. Effective, accurate information disseminated to all residents should be a priority.
Official contact with elected officials. The community should contact elected officials to make them aware of the problem and concerns of the community as a whole. The goals of such outreach could include seeking their support for additional funding the hog control effort in the slough and to determine what municipal resources could be brought to bear. Once again, this outreach should be by whatever entity within Paseo that can be empowered to speak with authority for the entire Paseo community.
