THE DANGER OF HAVING NO VISION
"Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he" (Bible Gateway). This well-known proverb plainly states that without a vision, people perish. When we look at the first part of this astute truth and principle-based statement, the word "perish" stands out with great poignancy. According to Merriam Webster's online dictionary, synonyms for perish include "die, succumb, expire, disappear, demise, and pass away."
THE NECESSITY FOR VISION FOR A FULL LIFE
Now, if people without a vision, dreams, or goals perish, die, or expire and if people who keep the law are happy, more inspired, more energetic, and more purpose driven, it follows that a vision is an absolute necessity for a fuller life. With vision being so vital in generating life and vigor, we have to ask ourselves: What is vision and how can we harness its power to transform our leadership and be of greater service to those we come in contact with on a daily basis?
VISION GENERATES VITALITY AND VALUE
"Vision is the ability to see what lies beyond the obvious, to see what can be possible" (Matthesius 13). Seeing what's possible and reaching for your goals and dreams with strategic and a well-executed work ethic is the key to transformational living and leading. One the one hand, a lack of vision foreshadows the absence of and inspired and motivated life. On the other hand, an abundance of vision paves the way for a highly emotionally inspired and intellectually stimulating one. Vision, therefore, is the exciting and necessary prerequisite for one's life and leadership to enjoy more vitality, vigor, and value.
VISION PROMOTES LEADERSHIP PASSION AND POSITIVE TRANSFORMATION
Let's reiterate: "Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he." A life without vision is a dangerous life to lead because it leads to spiritual emptiness and a motivational void. The presence of vision leads to a full life of vitality, value, and passion. "Passion is an incredible asset for leaders. It keeps us going when others quit. It becomes contagious and influences others to follow us. It pushes us through the toughest times and gives us energy" (Maxwell 44). Transformational leaders know just too well how important it is to have outstanding energy for more effective and impactful leadership.
VISION IS A CHOICE THAT YOU CAN CULTIVATE
For those of you aspiring leaders who want to hear some more good news, here it is: Your choice to cultivate vision is one of the greatest decisions you can ever commit to. The phenomena and action of vision is exceptional and noteworthy for efficient leadership because it leads to a happier and more passionate life. In turn, giving your happiness and passion away as valuable gifts to others is exactly the very essence of quality servant leadership. To increase our transformational and communal impact, we get to answer these leadership questions: Do we want to live and lead with vision? If so, what vision do we choose to build? And finally, how can this vision transform lives around us for the best?
