For Better Care More Safety
Technology has made it so much easier to create, synthesize, analyze, evaluate and store the data electronically and even it has been made accessible to people anywhere in world through internet. Every dimension of the modern world has been greatly influenced by the advancement of technology and so is nursing.
A discipline that is to be followed in health care facilities during the patient's stay at hospital for protecting the patient's health. It includes preventing and lowering the risks involved to patient health throughout the time of patient care in healthcare facility. (WHO 2019 )
Nursing informatics help in combining the nursing science along with the nursing data and analytical data for making nurses able to describe, identify and transfer the results, knowledge and wisdom throughout their nursing practice.
The informatics in health care setting provide great deal of help to nurses. The chances of medication or patient information errors are reduced to lowest withe the involvement of informatics in nursing practice.
A study was conducted by E. M. Borycki et al., (2012) in four major regions of world that are Arab World, North America, Japan and Denmark for addressing the major issues where health information systems are being used for patient empowerment and patient safety is being influenced. while working together on the issues regarding patient empowerment, patient information safety and patient safety, the group members of IMIA Working Group for Health Information System Safety worked on a review of the empirical and grey literature in those four nations with different health concerns. The study showed that the four regions studied are progressing in delivering the safe and excellent information for people to use in making the critical decisions. Apart from this, they are developing systems for detecting unsafe health information and functions and even including public to make them aware of the unsafe health information systems. this study overall concluded that though the informatics is helping the public and patients in getting great amount of health information online on World Wide Web (WWW) and using it for improvement of their health status, yet the security of online health data of patients is still arguable for the concerned patients.
Another research from a journal of American Medical Informatics Association , suppl. (2001) showed that in 1999, an estimation of American deaths was carried out that approximately 44,000-94,000 people die from more because of organizational structure rather than frontline workers. very least percent healthcare facilities had computerized system for keeping patient record and other informatics, but others had no or very less electronic instruments for patient care. For the patient safety, four distinct categories were chosen to make sure of patient safety that was, Clinical systems, human factors and communication, knowledge representation and protecting confidentiality. Later, the results concluded that the development of such environment that ensures patient safety is quite a difficult task that requires combined efforts of skilled clinical informatics, the informatic staff and researchers also. Refined and rigorous testing by students is required for building such complex system that fits in for such catagory.
There are basically two main types of nursing informatics. that are as following:
Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE)
Electronic Medical Records (EMRs)
Others for example, patient portals, healthcare workflow management and machine learning
This system enables the physicians to give treatment and care orders for patient to nurses electronically rather than writing or verbally speaking them. The Healthcare Information and Management System and Society gave certain information that nurses tend to do work more easily and faster than earlier with the availability of CPOE. (University of New England n.d.)
Patient Portals: The patient portals provide accessibility of patient's whole medication, lab test et cetra data to nurses for easy and quick actions in care.
Machine Learning: The machine learning enables the nurses to learn about use of the nursing informatics troughout their practice as they are not trained aerlier to do that and even evidence based learning is also made more possible and real for them.
The information of Canadian Nursing Informatics Association provide wide range of informatics for the health and welfare of the public and communities. The CNIA encourages nurses to be eligible to work in technological environment. The CNIA provides various opportunities to the nurses for making contribution in the informatics knowledge and comprehending the competencies in nursing informatics.(CNIA 2016)
