CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING COCC

You may have educational experiences outside the classroom that are eligible for college credit. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is credit obtained through assessment of this type of learning. COCC will evaluate the following prior learning toward certificate/degree requirements:

ACE Credit Recommendation (non-collegiate learning)
Military Service
Credit for Prior Industry Certifications
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Take an Exam

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Exam – This is a nationally recognized series of examinations which allow the student to demonstrate knowledge acquired in a non-college setting.
SOU accepts many of the CLEP exams. See this list of exams accepted by SOU.
A CLEP exam costs an average of $90 and earns 4 credits.

Create a Portfolio

Document your prior learning through personal study, work, professional licensure, certification or volunteer experience through a Portfolio of your work.

At Southern Oregon University, you can produce a portfolio of your work documenting that you have met the course outcomes for courses such as:

Business Communications

Interviewing and Listening
Digital Video Production
Environmental Science Applied Projects
Innovation and Leadership Applied Projects

Credit for Prior Learning

Oregon State University awards credit for prior learning in areas where a student has demonstrated mastery of knowledge that corresponds directly with course content taught here. Oregon State University recognizes numerous methods of demonstratingPortland State University recognizes that adults entering or returning to college bring with them a wide variety of prior learning experiences through work, travel, volunteering, activities in professional organizations, or self-study.

Some of these prior learning experiences may qualify students to earn college-level credit. Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows qualified students to earn credit for college-level learning outside of the classroom. CPL may be right for students if their prior learning experiences have resulted in college-level knowledge, skills and abilities, and they are able to demonstrate that this knowledge meets the objectives of designated college-level courses. this knowledge, including Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams, and credit for military education as recommended by the American Council on Education's (ACE) Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. OSU does not offer credit for portfolio or work experience. Credit for prior learning is subject to review at Oregon State University and is not guaranteed and is not typically granted.

Assessment-Based Learning Credits

Assessment Based Learning (ABL) credits are subject to review at Oregon State University, but OSU has traditionally not granted credit earned through ABL, as credits awarded in this fashion do not typically conform with the academic standards of our own coursework as established by OSU’s teaching faculty.
